Game Drives (at night): Night Safari - 8.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Even when lions are on the hunt and very hungry, their young will still want to play. the young are practicing the art of bringing down their prey....on themselves and they were to go hungry on this night as the zebra they initially set out to tackle made a hasty escape.

    Big 5: The Big 5 - 3 down, 2 to go!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kruger National Park and South Africa in general, have spent a considerable amount of money on anti-poaching activities, with a special army-trained squad going after ivory and rhino poachers.

Having said this, South Africa has been pushing hard for a lifting of the ivory ban. This is mostly so they can unload the huge stocks of ivory that the National Parks hold, and use the revenue for the parks.

    Landscapes: African Baobab Tree
  • Tip Rating:
  • My favourite of all the African trees is the Baobab! It is such a huge yet preposterous looking thing that it defies imagination! The Africans have a legend that says that the Creater gave the Baobab seeds to Baboons to plant. Unfortunately, the Baboons were so stupid that they put the seed into the soil upside down. Consequently, the Baobab has grown with its roots in the air! It seems like a good legend to me! If you look closely, you may see a small white dot near the bottom right side of the huge trunk - that is my Tilley sun hat!. These trees have the capability to suck up huge amounts of water, which is stored in their hollow trunks for later use - it reminds me of Arizona's Saguaro Cacti ! What you cannot see is the damage done to the bark of these trees by elephants. For as high as they can reach with their tusks, the bark is stripped off and eaten. Somehow, these trees manage to survive, this one being now protected inside the fence at Mopani - yet its bark was still gone.

    Birds: Good Bird-Watching!

  • Southern Yellow-Billed Hornbill - Kruger National Park

One good thing about being a birdwatcher is that you don't need large animals to keep you amused! As we made our slow tours around Kruger, I was constantly on the alert for the more elusive bird life that inhabited the area. We started off the first morning with a flock of Helmeted Guinea Fowl ouside our rondavel. While on our first drive, we came across a Black and White Hornbill, then an impressive Saddle-Billed Stork in a waterhole, followed by a colourful Lilac-Breasted Roller perched on a dead branch. Of course, both the Cape Buffalo and Giraffe that we came across had Oxpeckers clearing them of parasites! I was also really happy to have two great sightings of Ostriches, not to mention some Spoonbills scything for fish in a water-hole, while a crocodile watched them! We finally finished things off with a very impressive long-tailed Shrike at Mopani followed by the White-Backed Vultures that gave the lioness away as we left Kruger on our final morning in the Park. After seeing amazing Papuan Hornbills during my time in Papua New Guinea, I have always since been interested in this species - and here we came across a Yellow-Billed Hornbill between Letara and Mopani Camps!

Game Drives (Self-Driving): Self drive safari - 5.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best time for travelling the Kruger Park are the dry winter months from the end of May to the beginning of October. The vegetation is low then and enables you to view lots of game, mostly at the waterholes. These waterholes are fed by windmills that pump a continuous supply of water.

Game Drives (Self-Driving): Self drive safari - 2.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The speed limit on the tarred roads within the park is 50 km/h with a limit of 40km/h on gravel roads and 20km/h while driving within the restcamps. An average speed of 30km/h on tourist roads is recommended for maximum safety and enjoyment.
Wildlife in this park is prolific and can be found easily from the safety of the tared roads.

The "Big Five" animals (lion, rhino, elephant, leopard and buffalo,) are all very well represented within this park.

Anne and I experienced excellent viewing of all of the big 5, except for the leopard which is referred to as "notoriously difficult to find."

Anne and I were pleasently surprised by the cost of the evening safari. For 100 Rand (under US$20.00) the safari lasts for 3 hours. Our driver asked if anyone was due back for dinner in the reataurant at 9pm and when everyone said no, he took the tour for almost 4 hours!

Game Drives (at night): Night Safari - 5.
  • Tip Rating:
  • As mentioned earlier, all sorts of animals "come out" as the sun sets and baboons are a common sight.
I found these baboons fascinating to watch and photograph. They appear to be social animals and live in troops of varying sizes comprising females and their young plus one or more males.

It was entertaining watching troop behaviour and individuals inter-reacting, particularly as there were separate dominance heirarchies among males and females.
