SA Icons - FW de Klerk

by MikeAtSea

South Africa's last white president, Frederick Willem de Klerk took over an Apartheid government in its dying throes and helped Nelson Mandela see South Africa peacefully through the negotiation phases and into the elections. For his efforts, he was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Nelson Mandela.

SA Icons - Nelson Mandela

by MikeAtSea

South Africa's most famous son, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, is also a world icon of statesmanship and national reconciliation. Nelson Mandela is best known for his long struggle against the Apartheid government - a system of white domination and racial segregation. A co-founder of the African National Congress Youth League, he also founded the Defiance Campaign of 1952, based on Ghandi's principles of non-violence. In 1964 he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Apartheid government and sent to Robben Island. Released in 1990, Nelson Mandela was central to the multi-party negotiations which led to democratic elections in 1994. On May 10 of that year, he was inaugurated as South Africa's first black president. To this day, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate continues to work for the children and the poverty-stricken masses of South Africa.

The South African Flag

by MikeAtSea

The national flag was designed by a former South African State Herald, Mr Fred Brownell, and was first used on 27 April 1994. The design and colours are a synopsis of principal elements of the country's flag history. Individual colours, or colour combinations represent different meanings for different people and therefore no universal symbolism should be attached to any of the colours. The central design of the flag, beginning at the flagpost in a 'V' form and flowing into a single horizontal band to the outer edge of the fly, can be interpreted as the convergence of diverse elements within South African society, taking the road ahead in unity. The theme of convergence and unity ties in with the motto Unity is Strength of the previous South African Coat of Arms. Have a Braii

by sunshinejo

More commonly known to the rest of the world as a barbeque, a braii is a very popular way of cooking in South Africa and something the locals put a lot of effort into (and take pretty seriously!) I enjoyed a few very good braiis during my stay, but the one that really sticks out in my memory was one I had with some new local friends in Hermanus. They bought a massive snoeke (type of fish) marinaded it in apricot jam and a kind of garlic sauce and cooked it on aluminium foil over the braii. They also cooked some Bouerwurst (beef sausage - a south african specialty!) and potatoes and served with salad. For desert we toasted marshmallows over the embers. Don't forget you'll also be needing plenty of South African wine or beers!

South Africa - Its People

by MikeAtSea

South Africa, with its rich history and multitude of cultures, is a land of possibility and opportunity. Its biggest asset is undoubtedly its diverse mix of people proud of their heritage and the country's remarkable achievements during the First Decade of Freedom. South Africa is often called the Cradle of Humankind, for this is where archaeologists discovered 2,5-million-year-old fossils of our earliest ancestors, as well as 100 000-year-old remains of modern man. The Constitution recognises 11 official languages, namely Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga.

by canuck68

I see that Jennflower has covered the language differences in her tips. I was often served rusks with coffee in the morning. A great tradition that sometimes takes a bit of practice so you don't end up with your coffee all over your chin. My SA friends here in Canada got me used to doing it right.Know what your "takkies" are. They are your running shoes and you will be using them a lot. Also, for North Americans the parts of the car are quite different. For example, the "boot" is the "trunk". The passenger sits on the left. If you sit on the right you will end up on the driver's lap.
