Montagu has some good hiking trails, and a leaflet in the Tourism Bureau provides small maps and information about them.
The best known is the walk through the Badskloof to the Hot Srpings; it's a 2.2km through the gorge and there is a R7 fee for use.
There is also a 12.1km trail through Cogmans Kloof to the west of town, although the trail doesn't actually go through the Kloof and doesn't even get you as far as the pass tunnel. It provides greta views over Montagu and down the valley.
The least travelled is the Boupunt Trail that can be completed in around 7 hours, and gets up to an impressive height (1,266m). Water is absolutely essential on this trek, and there is one water point en-route (do use it!).

Address: Various starting points.
On the corner of Bath Street and Barry Street is a quite remarkable tree, absolutely covered from top to bottom in huge birds. Although there are a wide variety of residents here, the most obvious are the enormous sacred ibises and herons that just perch nonchalantly above the heads of passers-by on the pavement below. The tree is actually quite hard to see for the mass of birds!

There is a lovely church in town which has been beautifully restored. The increase in tourism in the area has really helped to restore and preserve many of the old buildings. The town is well looked after and there are many beautiful gardens.

Potjie - you can’t miss it!! There are different breads, various potjies (stews) and vegetables as well as desserts and tea and good old boeretroos – coffee served from big black pots on an open fire.

A potjiekos lunch is optional at the end of your trip and I can highly recommend it. It is served outdoors at wooden tables under the huge bluegum trees. A perfect setting to end off the morning. It is R50 for adults and R10 for under 5’s and R20 for children. You don’t get better value than this!

This tractor trip has become legendary and is an absolute must. The ride takes you up into the Langeberg Mountains with the Koo Valley stretching into the distance below. The trips run Wednesdays at 10am and Saturdays at 10am and 2pm. You should book ahead of time (I phoned a week ahead and had to be put on standby!)

One thing you cannot miss is the tractor trailer ride. To get to Protea Farm from Cape Town get on the N1 (don’t take the toll rather do the scenic Du |Toitskloof Pass of you have time). From the N1 take the R318 the farm will be at the start of Burgers Pass on your RHS. You shouldn’t miss the sign as in my picture. If you are coming from Montague the farm is 29km from town – head out on Bath street.
Bookings are made through Montague Tourism Bureau (24 Bath street in town) 023 614 2471. It costs R50 for Adults and R20 for kids.
