Graskop is a good place to take a break while you travel the panorama route, as there are several tempting bakeries and aromatic coffee shops where you can stop and have a bite eat. The gold mining days are long gone and Graskop now has a thriving timber industry. The plantations are some of the largest man made forests in the world and you cannot fail to notice endless rows of pine and eucalyptus trees as you cruise the hills and valleys of this beautiful area.
Graskop is a central location from which to explore the surrounding area.

Johannesburg started out when gold was discovered in 1886 and it has developed at a lightening pace since then.
It's other name 'eGoli', means 'City of gold'. Its large gold resources were found in the Witwatersrand area.
Johannesburg is a part of Gauteng, which is responsible for 40% of the country’s GDP, which is pretty amazing when you think about it!
It’s the business hub of the country, and is vibrant and alive, with half of South Africa’s population living here.
It is not too far from Mpumalanga (about a 4 hour drive) and definately worth a visit if you can get there. There is so much to see and do there. Have a look at my Johannesburg page for further info :) Leave a Comment

In the revolution led by Mandela to transform a country based on cruel and unfair apartheid laws and division, into an open democracy, he alone has achieved a miracle. A miracle of human nature ~ more often that not people go to war in cases like this, but he opted for the peaceful and forgiving route. He did this together with the then President, F.W de Klerk. Both are good men in my opinion.

I came here a few times a child, on a church visit, plus on school outings.
As a white girl, growing up in the suburbs, I had no knowledge of what went on in Soweto whilst growing up.
The Nursery School staff that came into work from Soweto everyday (some staff stayed on the property), didnt say much about what went on, only that they needed their passes with them at all times.
I didn't, as a young girl, understand the implications of all this...
The government kept things quiet, and, as they had control over the media at the time, nothing was broadcast.
I first visited Soweto when I went with my family to a church meeting. We knew the pastor and he had specially invited us to a service.
We stood in the front of the church and sang a song… the only white people out of hundreds of people.
I didn’t feel at all scared or nervous, the love and acceptance I felt from the people in Soweto was immense. They are a community in the true sense of the word.
There are also a lot of people doing a lot of good who are trying to make better lives for themselves and others in Soweto. Leave a Comment

The Pilansberg Nature and Game Reserve is not a National Park, although many think it is. It is a popular game park for various reasons in my view:
- It’s really close to one of the tourist hot spots in Africa (next door in fact!) – Sun City and the Lost City are flocked with visitors from abroad and locals all year round.
- It is not expensive to visit, unlike many of the private game parks in the country. It is excellent value for money.
- The park is not too big, but is large enough, so that you are ensured of seeing a decent amount of animals. Even though the Kruger National Park is my favourite Game Park of all, it is really large, and you may see everything you want to in a visit, or you may see nothing much.
- As with the majority of game parks in South Africa, it is very well maintained and a pleasure to visit. Roads are good too, which makes a huge difference to your enjoyment, never mind how good your suspension is!
The best place to view animals is at watering holes.
Elephants and other animals congregate here in large groups, anything from 12 to 40 at a time, so it’s a great place to view them interacting with one another.
This communal effort is also very good as a defence against possible attack, as the hunters lie in wait at the waterholes, knowing that animals will come to it every couple of hours.
Best time to view them drinking is early morning and then dusk. In the searing heat of the day they tend to stay in shady areas. Leave a Comment

There is SO much to see and do here, for nature lovers, speed freaks, water babies, some gambling fun, family orientated activities, bird watchers, swimming, golfing.. you name it, you can find it here!
I have been here a few times and have a mix of old (scanned) photos, as well as new, digital ones. The newer ones are far nicer quality but the old are still special, so I have left them on here.
Mid week visits are less crowded and personally, more enjoyable due to this. We have gone on weekends before and this last time (Jan 2007), we made sure it was for a few days mid-week.
There is so much to do here! We did a variety of water sports and had a wonderful time. We came here with family - my brother, his wife and their little girl - and so it was an extra special time for us all. Leave a Comment
