THE PINNACLE

by DAO

The Pinnacle Rock is a 30m (98ft) high tower-like "Needle". The rock is quartzite which starts as sandstone, but is compressed for thousands of years to make an almost indestructible rock. It does not support plants well, so it looks even more dramatic. The Pinnacle towers over a fern covered ravine created by the Ngwaritsane River. To the right and below the viewing area you can see the uppermost of eight waterfalls which are in the river as it falls more than 450m (1477 ft) into the dramatic valley below. The Pinnacle is very near God’s Window and you enter through the same entrance to view this master class of nature.

3 RONDAVELS & THE BLYDE RIVER VALLEY

by DAO

A Rondavel (or Rondawel) is a South African word for a round hut dwelling with a thatched roof. The giant peaks of quartzite and shale that make up the 3 Rondavels have sheer rock walls towering more than 700 meters (2300 ft) above the ground. The best time to view these are at sunset when they turn a vivid red colour. Named after the 3 most troublesome wives of Chief Maripi Mashile. From left to right they are: Magabolle, Mogoladikwe and Maseroto. The same viewing platform also gives you the most spectacular view possible of the Blyde River Valley. You can climb out onto large rocks that hand over the void, just be careful!

The Blyde River Canyon

by cokes

The Blyde River Canyon is one of the most spectacular views in South Africa and its cliffs rise between 600m-800m from the river bed.At the Three Rondavels viewpoint (also called The Three Sisters) is an unforgettable view of three huge rock spirals rising out of the far wall of the Blyde River Canyon.I had this in my Jo`burg Page but it actually belongs here. This definitely a place worth seeing.

Africa on Foot

by tompt

Next to the well known Kruger Park, there are many privately owned smaller game parks in this province. Many of them adjoining the Kruger Park, without fences. So what ever game you can see in the Kruger can also be found here.We visited the Klasserie Game Reserve, and stayed in the Africa on Foot camp. Special here is that every day you go for a game drive in the afternoon, but a game walk in the morning. Walking in the bush is a special thing to do, very exciting. We liked the camp but were a bit unlucky in terms of animals we spotted. Many people manage to see the complete Big 5 here, we only managed two of them, the elephant and the buffalo. Very special were the two cheetahs on the last morning though.

Lone Creek Falls

by cokes

This is also another nice waterfall. When following the path to the waterfall please be aware that the path leads to the bottom of the waterfall. The spray from here is quiet massive so it will feel like a light drizzle but cross the bridge infront of the falls and you`ll still be able to have a good view of the falls without the big spray in your face.Entrance here is also R5 per person and there is also curio stalls here.

Bourkes Luck Potholes

by cokes

This natural water feature marks the beginning of the Blyde River Canyon. Through countless eons the swirling whirlpools which occur as the Treur River plunges into the Blyde River caused waterborne sand and rock to grind huge, cylindrical potholes into the bedrock of the river. Entrance here is abit expensive. It`s R25 per person and R5 for your car. There is also alot of curio shops and a shop and reception area with nice Friendly people who is of good help.
