The Panorama Route

by galy

The Panorama Route is one of the most beautiful destinations in South Africa. The inland plateau declines abruptly and steeply and opens up fantastic views of the plains of the Low-veld a thousand metres below. The most spectacular stretch is the Blyde River Canyon with the 33 km long gorge. The Canyon starts at "Bourke's Luck Potholes" and ends at the "Three Rondavels". don't miss the small loop road that leads to "God's Window", to enjoy the wonderful view on the Low-veld.

Lucky Potholes

by Myndo

The lucky potholes not really deserve their name. Maybe it was only wishful thinking. A gold digger claimed the area as his, believing hard that gold would be found here. Unfortunately it never was. But he wasn't totally wrong, because gold was found - just not right there.Made by the flowing water of the Blyde River, stone and sand washed out these "pot"-holes in time not measurableIn Switzerland we call these formations stone mills. If you can look in, you may still see the origiinal stone that created it - or at least the sand it left behind. The walks to and from these stone formations are well maintained and even tarred. No problem here. But to access you have to pay an admission fee, 20 Rand it was, I think. There is also a visitor center about the history of the area.

Over the Long Tom Pass

by Myndo

Driving down from Johannesburg, you will almost certainly come through here on your way to the Mpumalunga area. The name "Long Tom Pass" comes from the big gun (see pic) used by the Boer forces in the Anglo Boer War (England against the Buren, from Netherland). The Area can be astounding green, with woods. The highest point is 2150m - and a sign pointing it out.Very funny (well, not really) was the sign which announced the "Tourist Bus Accident 19XX Memorial in 300m".

Berlin Falls

by Myndo

The Berlin Falls- I do not know how it became its name. Was it some german explorer who named them?Wherever the name comes from, it is a Waterfall in nice surrounding. You have to walk some meters from the road to get there.Be careful, when it has been raining, the way is unpaved and tends to get slippery. On the other hand a little rain makes the waterfall more impressive ...

Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. Viewpoints

by Myndo

If you want to have a wonderful view into a very green Canyon in Africa, then you should come here. The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve is a place to stay (see top there) or start hikes, but also good to just have a look down the canyon of Blyde River. From Gods Window and Wonder View you have wonderful View-Points over the Canyon and Surroundings.Gods window sports a big parking space. From the parking it is only a few steps up to the view point between the hills.Due to the rain we had there, we did not have the full view to the horizont, but it was beautiful anyway.

LOWVELD BOTANICAL GARDENS

by PEE-WEE

Nelspruit Mpumalanga South AfricaThe turnoff to the Lowveld Botanical Gardens is situated on the R40 to White River, about three kilometres from the centre of Nelspruit. Set in spectacular scenery on the banks of the Crocodile River, this is one of Mpumalanga 's most magnificent botanical gardens featuring a waterfall and many rare lowveld species. The huge diversity of plants includes South Africa's best collection of indigenous ferns, 500 tree species and the rare cycads for which the garden is famous. A number of trails meander through the garden, which is at its best in summer.

BLYDE RIVER CANYON.

by PEE-WEE

Few will ever forget their first glimpse of the spectacular gorge, the Blyde River Canyon. The gorge is the third largest in the world and one of South Africa's scenic wonders. The Blyde River Canyon is the kind of place where brochures and guide books run out of original adjectives to describe the fresh mountain scenery and magnificent panoramic views. At the ‘Three Rondavels viewpoint’ (also called ‘The Three Sisters’) is an unforgettable view of three huge rock spirals rising out of the far wall of the Blyde River Canyon. Their tops appear to have a hut-like rounded roof. Where the Blyde River (‘river of joy’) and the Treur River (‘river of sorrow’) meet, water erosion has formed one of the most remarkable geological phenomena in the country, known as ‘Bourke’s Luck Potholes’. Over thousands of years, surreal cylindrical rock sculptures created by whirling water, have formed a series...

BOURKES LUCK POTHOLES.

by PEE-WEE

Where the Blyde River ("river of joy") and the Treur River ("river of sorrow") meet, water erosion has formed one of the most remarkable geological phenomena in the country, known as the Bourke's Luck Potholes. Over thousands of years, surreal cylindrical rock sculptures created by whirling water, have formed a series of dark pools which contrast artfully with the streaked white and yellow lichen covered rocks.

SUDWALA CAVES.

by PEE-WEE

The series of caverns called the Sudwala Caves are one of South Africa's major attractions. The caves are believed to be about 2 000 million years old and contain not only stalagmites and stalagtites, but also the fossilised remains of 'collenia' a form of algae that it is believed life on earth evolved from. Prehistoric man used the Sudwala Caves for shelter and although there is a constant flow of fresh air in the caves, no one knows where it comes from. The caves were discovered in the early 19th century during a Swazi succession melodrama. The find was made by Somquba, son of Swazi king Sobhuza I, who, with his followers, fled here in fear of his brother Mswati. The dispute also involved substantial numbers of royal cattle. Somquba and his people built a village next to the entrance to the caves, where they hid every time Mswati and his punitive parties arrived on the scene. Several...
