Swaziland, Zulu culture 2

by ATLC

Much less touristic was the Zulu kraal in Swaziland. The "chief" Albert started talking about our Dutch football hero Gullit, the moment he realised we were from the Netherlands.Entering a kraal asks for some etiquette. The woman always enters first on the left side, because there might be an enemy inside to stab the person entering. The brave Zulu warrior enters on the right side after the woman! He can have more than one wife, and obviously a lot of competition goes on between the wives who will poison each other to become the favoured first wife! So the child of the wife that has prepared the meal must taste it first.I guess that's mostly history now...

Swaziland, Batik making

by ATLC

We stumbled on this little batik factory (run by a Dutch woman). Batik is very common in Africa but it did come from Indonesia, although the patterns are much less intricate than in Indonesia. We bought some cushion covers for the new couch. Except we haven't got the new couch yet, because we went to South Africa!

Lodgings at Forresters Arms

by ATLC

Lodgings were more than adequate. I remember taking a long shower because the water pressure was so good!Food at Forresters Arms was just fabulous! Fresh, homemade breads and cakes for breakfast. And you could eat all the items on the dinner menu if you wished, they'd just make smaller portions. Here we saw that apartheid had not affected Swaziland. The black women were much more self-assured. At this particular lodging, the owner takes care to open a personal account for each of his female workers, so that only they and not their husbands, can get at their salary.

Namaqualand natures beautiful spectales

by cosmopolit

Every year nature repeats one of it's stunningly beautiful spectales in South Africa by putting on the most amazing flowershow I've ever seen..Beauty beyond grasp just overwhelming..Namaqualand is located near the northern border between SA and Namibia. Leave Cape Town heading north for Namibia. Once you hit Steinkopf you're approaching the area ask locals for directions.Depending on rainseason it usually starts towards end of july beginning of august and lasts for only two weeks.

Llandudno

by annieruel

This is one of the most beautiful beaches in Cape Town and is situated only 18 kilometres from the centre of the city. The tranquil little cove is perfect for those that seek complete peace and privacy. It is named after a British seaside town in Wales and this small exclusive seaside village has only one road in and out and no shops whatsoever. The beach is picture perfect framed by bushes, trees and giant boulders and has a good surfable wave. A 20 minute walk from Sunset Rocks is the famous nudist beach of Sandy Bay, the mention of which often causes guffaws. There is no direct vehicle access, which helps to stop passing ogglers, and generally people respect each other’s privacy. The only ones getting a good view of this beach are those taking a scenic helicopter ride.

Soweto

by Bwana_Brown

While I was in the conference, my wife took a guided tour of Soweto. She found it to be quite interesting to drive around this huge Township and they also made a couple of interesting stops. One was at this restaurant, Wenda's Shabeen, where they were able to meet with the cooks and the bartender.

Tip Photo
Blyde River Canyon

by Bwana_Brown

While in the Sabie area, be sure to visit the Blyde River Canyon area. There are fantastic views out over the Lowveld including 'God's Window' and this photo of the 'Three Rondavels' (it was bit hazy when we were there). There really is a great vista - reminds me of the Grand Canyon!

Tip Photo
Klein Kariba

by CharleneP

Klein Kariba was designed for exceptional comfort. There is a cool swimming pool aswell as a gigantic heated pool. Then go and relax with a bit of putt-putt or table tennis, or keep up the pace on the squash court or the trampoline. The kids can play on the water tube for as long as their bottoms allow it!You can bring along your fishing tackle, because there are two picturesque dams where you can catch fish. There is also a well-equipped shop and a liquor store.

Hiking around St Lucia

by spetterke

Buy a map at St Lucia. On the road to Cape Vidal (you must pay 55 rand) there are some tracks, through the woods where you find hiding places to observe crocs and hippo,s.When you're there in November, then go with a guide upon the beaches to watch the sea turtles at night.

Tip Photo
Cape of Good Hope

by spetterke

If you are visiting the Nature Reserve of Cape Point, and you like hiking, start at the sign of Cape of good Hope(the most southwesternpoint of Africa),climbing the rocks on your left side, and walk high above the cliffs up to the Lighthouse of Cape Point. There is another beautiful track, passing the Wreck of Thomas T Tucker.Beware for the monkees.DONT FEED THEM.
