Exploring nature

by Jenniflower

There is something for everyone in South Africa, and wherever you are, you are never too far from nature. Lakes, rivers, mountains, caves, beaches, winelands etc. South Africa has an abundant and rich vegetation and exploration always brings one into contact with something new, even if you've done that route before.

Caves in South Africa!

by Jenniflower

There are some superb caves in South Africa - from easy access caves to adventure caves, where you are in deep tunnels, which may be partially filled with water etc. ALWAYS have a guide when caving. Accidents happen so easily. My own brother in law had a bad caving accident in 2008 (where he smashed his camera, but he got off lightly as his foot got caught!), but he was with friends so they could raise the alarm. NEVER go alone.I have been in Kalk Bay Caves, Fish Hoek cave (Piers Cave), Cango Caves (Oudtshoorn), Sterkfonten Caves and Sudwala Caves (Mpumalanga) thus far.

Hiking trails

by Jenniflower

Guided Hikes are normally available on a daily basis from most hotels, resorts and Natal Nature Conservation Services camps throughout South Africa. Hikes will always vary from easy strolls of about an hour to visit local attractions to more strenuous all day climbs. You can go on unguided hikes, even unguided overnight hikes, and stay overnight in a tent or in a cave... but remember to always stay on a designated route and let the camp officials know where you are going and what time you are leaving. Bad weather can come in very quickly, so it's crucial someone knows where you are at all times.

Game Viewing at its best

by MichaelDovey

If looking at somewhere to stay to view the Big 5, I would recommend you look at http://timbavati.krugerpark.co.za The Timbavati game reserve borders onto the kruger, and until abou 12 years ago there was a fence between them. This fence was removed and the animals now move freely between the areas. These lodges have some cheaper options than Sabi Sands. We have stayed at Kambaku previously, and had a great time. All these private lodges do morning and evening game drives in open game viewing vehicles, which really adds to the whole experiance. You can fly to Jhb, and then connect to Hoedspruit airport, where the lodges will collect you, and return you.Enjoy your tripRegardsMike

Mpumalanga county

by georeiser

The Mpumalanga county is (as I see it) mainly large forest areas and deserted farmlands with cattle and farm animals. I came to South-Africa with minibus from Swasiland. We drove without a singel stop through Mpumalanga county to Gauiteng county.

Feel like your part of your surroundings

by queens_own

At 08.00 the gates to Sani Pass were opened and having had our passports stamped we set off to climb Sani Pass into Lesotho, only 4x4s are allowed and the reasons behind this only became apparent when we started climbing the gravel road to the top of the pass, the road is only wide enough for one vehicle and has no roadside guards to stop you from driving over the edge! there are still wrecks to be seen to prove this point, the views before and during the climb are beyond belief and these alone make this trip worthwhile, at the top of the pass there is another police post for the stamping of passports, but the crowning glory of the trip is South Africa's highest pub, it is a magnet for all types of off roaders, just sitting there eating a wonderful meal complete with your favourite drink whilst taking in the views from the top of the Burg mountains! well its just mind blowing.I can also...

Fly or drive from Cape Town to Windhoek?

by Jenniflower

It is a long drive and you need to allot enough time for it... there are some beautiful areas along the way, like Namaqualand during the flower season. The terrain is vastly different to the Cape's... far less green and mountainous etc. I would fly from the Cape to Windhoek. It would be a shame to *fly* through the West Coast of South Africa in a car. I would do this drive in a week.
