GPS travel is the only way to go!

by Flyin4Free

I have a Garmin Nuvi 650 with South Africa loaded on to it. and it made our trip perfect. We drove ourselves everywhere we went, and it was so great to never get lost, and just turn up a road you wanted to see, and not worry about where you needed to go to get to your destination later. It allowed us to see villiages, and school, and culture we would have never experienced otherwise. The photo is of some women with 5 gallon buckets on their head 3/4 full of fluid walking up a steep dirt road. Don't know where actually, but it sure was cool to see..

Those great South African wines

by aztraveler2

Do go on a "tour" of the many wineries in the surrounding areas of Capetown. Usually you can arrange a private tour with a local company. On many occasions, it will be you, any traveling partners and a driver. This is great because you get a local view on many topics discussed while you are driving between wineries. There are several wineries from which to choose and you can visit two or three easily in a few hours. You will be rewarded with beautiful views and landscapes and, of course, quality wine tastings.

Desolation Valley or Valley of Desolation

by canuck68

We drove up a narrow winding road for a few kilometers and parked the car. Then there was a short circular hike that led to spectacular view of the Karroo. The view was breathtaking and very much worth the short trip from Graff-Reinet.

Wydah Tours

by nebulaflash

We used Wydah Tours in South Africa and I believe that we wouldn't have had such a fabulous visit without their knowledge (and of course our daughter who has been living at Kruger) about South African places and accommodation. We were able to see parts of South Africa that are off the beaten track, that shows the true natural beauty of the country. The lodges we stayed at were comfortable and respectful to the environment and local culture. Our trip was truly a beautiful experience. Wydah will put together an intinerary for you based on your time and budget allowances. Special thanks to all at Wydah for the lovely memories we will enjoy for many years to come.Wydah ToursBox 53418KenilworthCape Town7745South Africa

Voortrekker Monument (Pretoria)

by jorgejuansanchez

While waiting for my visa to Mozambique I went to Pretoria where I saw a huge building surrounded by a wall with 64 carriages. In its interior was explained the trekking of Dutch with some French and German colons in search of new lands in the north escaping from the hostile British administration. During 3 years they trekked thousands of kilometres (the word trekking comes from this exploit). But something disgusted me: along 27 scenes I only saw Whites being attacked by Blacks (it was the opposite), Blacks killing each other (Zulus against Xhosas), or the pride to have killed in one battle 15.000 Blacks without a single White casualty…Somehow that monument reminded me the old Westerns films from USA where the Indians are depicted as criminals who kill the white children and poor women (while it happened exactly the contrary).I felt better when, back in Johannesburg, I heard in a park...

North-Eastern Mpumalanga

by AndreSTGT

In this region of magnificent scenic beauty you'll find some of South Africa's most impressive natural sights. The 70m Bridal Veil Falls are in a very beautiful region near Sabie. In the same area you'll find the impressive Mac Mac Falls......and Mac Mac Pools, a beautiful picnic area with deep and refreshing natural pools for a nice dip.In an even more spectacular landscape north of Graskop are the Berlin Falls.

Cintsa

by AndreSTGT

Cintsa lies at the western end of the Wild Coast and is one of the most beautiful and accessible places on the coast with the usual glorious mix of beaches, lagoons and lush vegetation. While the resort itself is a little dull, Cintsa is worth visiting for Michaela's alone, one of the most beautiful restaurants in the country (in the world?).

The Breaker

by TheWanderingCamel

"Shoot straight, you b******s" were the last words of Harry "The Breaker" Morant - crack horseman, poet, hero (or rogue - depending on your point of view), as he and fellow lieutenant, Peter Handcock, soldiers in the Bushveldt Carbineers ( a mainly Australian force raised in South Africa), faced a British firing squad on 27 February, 1902, in the dying days of the Boer War. They stood convicted of executing a Boer found wearing the clothes of their murdered and mutilated friend, Carbineer Captain Hunt , and some other Boer prisoners. A German missionary was also killed after Morant had suspicions about his motives in speaking with Boer prisoners, though on this charge they were found "Not guilty".The death warrant had been signed by Lord Kitchener himself, and when he later revealed, in writing, that he had issued orders to kill Boers wearing English uniforms, and furthermore that the...
