Graaff Reinet

by canuck68

We drove to Graaff Reinet and I found it quite interesting. It is a historic town and so there are many very old building there.. There is quite a bit of Cape Dutch architecture which I find very attractive. The town itself is very quiet and there is not a lot to do there as far as I know. However, we were only there for a short time.

Oudtschoorn - Cango Caves

by canuck68

A tour of the Cango Caves is a must if you are in the area. The tour is a guided one and is most interesting. The stalagmites and stalactites have formed amazing configurations over the years. Our guide was very knowledgeable. The tour took about an hour and was well worth it.

BUFFALO

by PEE-WEE

The Buffalo is one of the largest animals in the African bushveld. The Buffalo is well known amongst hunters as a formidable foe. If a Buffalo is wounded it can become one of the most dangerous animals to confront. Cape Buffalo live in large herds, sometimes as many as a thousand. Buffalo are grazers and will sometimes browse from trees and shrubs when the grass is not nutritious. Mothers have one calf a year. Buffalo are preyed on by Lions.

THE LEOPARD

by PEE-WEE

The Leopard is normally a solitary animal except during mating season. Leopards are powerfully built big cat. Leopard hide in thick bush or up a tree during the day and hunt at night. They prey on a large variety of animals and birds from Francolin to Guinea fowl and Tortoises to Impala, Waterbuck and Wildebeest. Baboons and monkeys are also particularly favoured by leopard. Prey is killed by breaking the neck and then the carcass is carried up a tree to keep it out of reach of scavengers such as Hyaena and Jackal.

WHY THE WARTHOG WALKS ON IT'S KNEES.

by PEE-WEE

The warthog built himself a house out of an old ant termite hill. He hollowed out the inside and made a wide, grand entrance on one side so that all the animals would be able to see his beautiful house. He stood proudly outside as the giraffe and the antelope walked past, "See my fine house," he would say, "nobody has a house as fine as mine."One day Bhubesi the lion came prowling by. Warthog suddenly realized that because of his vanity he had made the entrance to his house so large that the lion would be able to enter. The lion chased him into his house. "AAAiiiiish!" said the warthog to himself, "What shall I do now?" He decided to copy the trick used by the wily jackal. He got down on his knees and thrust his rear end up to the roof. "Be careful Bhubesi" he shouted, "the roof is falling down, run before it comes down on your head!" The lion shook his head and the lion is no fool. The...

THE ZEBRA.

by PEE-WEE

Long, long ago at the beginning of time when the earth was still young, many of the animals looked very different to how we know them today. The zebra was as white as the snow on top of the mountains and the baboon was covered in fur from his head to his tail. The shining white zebra stallion was extremely vain and would admire his reflection in a pool of water. "How beautiful I am," he would say shaking his head and flicking his tail. One day the zebra stallion saw the ugly baboon across the banks of the Umfoloze river. "See how beautiful I am you ugly baboon!" he cried, his voice echoing off the hills. The baboon tossed his head in anger and with rolling eyes barked back, "You silly zebra, you may be more beautiful, but I am stronger!"The baboon challenged the zebra to a fight. The very next night, by the light of a huge fire, the whole Zulu tribe came out to watch the zebra and the...
