Swartberg Pass, Overlooking the Karoo

by Waxbag

As an alternative to taking the N2 from George to Capetown Take the N12 to Oudtshoorn and continue north past the Cango caves. The Swartberg Pass is a low point in a mountain range that divides the lush Garden Route with the very dry and bleak desert of the Karoo. It was constructed by an engineer Thomas Bain completed in 1888. It is on 24 km of dirt and gravel road and reaches an altitude of 5200 feet (1600 m). Portions of the road are cut into the mountain and reinforced with huge rock underneath. The road is narrow and can get a bit Closter phobic. There are some blind curves. This is a popular place to bicycle watch out.Fynbos and proteas are prolific here and there are small clusters of evergreens with few other trees. Hiking trails crisscross the mountains. It is possible to rent bikes and ride up to the pass and coast down. Several hotels and hostels in Outshoorn will give you a...

Lisbon Falls and Rainbows in Mpumalunga

by Waxbag

Lisbon Falls is one of the best falls in the region. You can climb down a trail from the parking area and walk right up to the base of the falls where the water creates a lovely pool. The water is clear and crisp. It’s cold but take a dip if you wish. Behind the smaller falls is an old gold mine. You can climb up into the mine but it is very slippery and treacherous with all that water coming down on you. There is no entrance fee. Security appears to be fine.Directions:From Hazyview go north on S40 for about 5km. Turn left on S532 and go 24 km. Turn left on the S533 and go 12 km to Graskop. The falls is located off of R532 about 8 kms from GraskopGraskop

A MUST DO thing in Cape Town!

by Debbyisontheway

We went to climb the table mountain straight away after I just landed in SA after a long 20 hours flight (include 2 hrs waiting in HK and 3 hrs waiting in J'burg). I wasn't prepared to climb the mountain at all...it just happened!!!I thought we just went for a walk. So I didn't bring any water. Besides, I thought we could just take the cable car down the mountain if necessary. However....things turned out differently.....The first half an hour was quite pleasant. I and my loved one had some nice chit-chat. The view was awesome on the way. But after a while, I started feeling slightly not-so-right. I think it's something to do with my jet-lag plus my period ache. However, we couldn't walk back coz it's even farther to walk back. So, I decided to bite the bullet and did it. (oh, well....look at it back now, I am glad I made the decision!) On the way up, it's getting tougher and tougher. My...

INDWE XALANGA.

by PEE-WEE

At the southern end of the Drakensberg range are the great sandstone cliffs known as Xalanga ('the place of vultures'). Beneath these cliffs lies the small town of Indwe, named from the Xhosa word for the blue crane, the bird emblem of South Africa. The town was founded in 1896 as a coal- mining centre, but the mine is no longer worked.

animals or history?

by africaking

There are a lot of off the beaten path places in South Africa, you could take a Safari, rafting, caving or even visit historical towns such as Ladysmith, where Lord Baden-Powell was seiged during the boer war, many of these towns have museums.

Hluwele-Emfolozi Game Reserve

by windsorgirl

This game reserve is actually located in Zululand. It was established in 1895 and differs from other parks that I visited in that it has a beautiful landscape of green rolling hills.see my travelogue for photos of the animals we spotted here including zebra, impala, white and black rhino.

Human-Powered Ferry

by kepcsu

We decided to take the back roads rather than the main highway, and while driving along rural farm roads that took us past Bredasdorp and Ouplaas to the town of Malgas where we went across the river on the last remaining human-powered ferry in the country. It was an interesting experience you don't see everyday!

Johannesburg - Mai Mai Bazaar

by nxlink

This unusual market features the folk medicines and traditional healing methods that are still followed by a significant portion of the South African population. Herbs, roots, bulbs, tree bark, animal parts and bones are all on display for sale. Each has its special place in curing various physical ills. Even more interesting, the myriad products can be used to cure spells or break a streak of general misfortunes. Sangomas or spiritual healers and seers, are available for consultation on whatever ails you. Even in the case of ills brought on by witchcraft or bad luck, the sangoma can diagnose the source of your problem and prescribe some concoction to cure you.

Jo'burg: Museum Africa

by rslyons99

I'm not sure if a big museum in downtown Jo'burg is really "off the beaten path," but since most tourists are scared to go down there, why not? The museum is just off the M1 in Newtown, and has parking. The museum itself is pretty good, with large exhibits on apartheid-era judicial abuses, Southern Africa geology, and the transition to democracy. Maybe the most entertaining exhibit is a large collection of newspaper cartoons from the last decade, celebrating the successes and lampooning the failures of the great social changes taking place here.

Transkei / Wild Coast

by AndreSTGT

The former homeland of the Xhosa tribe is still one of the poorest, but at the same time one of the most fascinating and beautiful regions of South Africa. Gentle rolling hills with colorful rondavel villages make up the hinterland and the wild coastline is absolutely breathtaking. The Xhosa people are very friendly and they're happy to welcome foreign tourists.I have built tips for the most popular tourist destinations of the Wild Coast.
