Zululand

by AndreSTGT

Zululand is a land of beautiful, green rolling hills and traditional rondavel villages. It's the home of the Zulu tribe which is probably South Africa's most famous tribe due to the TV series 'Shaka Zulu'.In Babanango, a remote backwater, it seems to be mandatory to pay a visit to Stan's Pub, apparently Michael Caine's favorite drinking hole during the filming of Zulu. While i'm not really interested in this kind of 'follow your star' travel, Stan's Pub is actually quite an experience, and they serve dirt cheap cocktails, too.

The edge of drought

by Merry_Prankster

Along the Botswana, Namibia, South Africa border is where one can watch high feld transforms into drought and then into desert. After a two hour drive, a destination marker appears as seen in the picture.

Tzanine

by Merry_Prankster

Tzanine is a natural rain forest valley isolated in the North Eastern transvaal. Its region hosts banana, pecan and rooibois tea plantations. About an hour west of Kruger park.TYhe center social activvity of town is McDonalds fresh farm produce shop and restaraunt (yes, sued by the conglomerate but its been around longer than Miccy Ds).

Sodwana Bay

by AndreSTGT

Sodwana Bay is a remote beach resort in Maputaland just south of the Mozambique border. It's a very beautiful, pristine spot with endless sandy beaches and tropical scenery. Getting there involves a long drive on unpaved roads, but you'll be rewarded with one of the nicest beach resorts in South Africa.

Tip Photo
Coffee Bay

by AndreSTGT

Despite its relative remoteness, Coffee Bay, is pretty popular with tourists. It's a relaxed resort with a lagoon on a wild-romantic green coast.8km west of Coffee Bay is a place called 'Hole in the wall', a rock formation with an impressive natural hole that has been formed by the sea. It's one of the Wild Coast's major attractions, and there are also two nice beaches and a backpacker. The coastal road from Hole in the Wall to Coffee Bay is very rough and barely navigable by ordinary vehicles, but it offers spectacular views over the coast and passes some picturesque, but poor traditional Xhosa villages.

Tip Photo
Port St. Johns

by AndreSTGT

Port St. Johns is situated on a river mouth at the Northern end of the Wild Coast. Approaching PSJ by car is breathtaking and while the town itself is nothing special, the surrounding countryside is a perfect dream with tropical vegetation, lagoons and beaches, esp. the secluded so-called 'Second Beach' is of almost magic beauty.

Nudist Beach -Cape Town - Sandy Bay

by nxlink

Sandy Bay lies 18 kilometers from the center of Cape Town and can be reached by a winding, scenic road that follows the Cape Peninsula mountains through a number of ritzy coastal suburbs.Once you come to the small town of Llandudno follow the signs to Sandy Bay beach. There is a parking area past all the houses. You then follow the walkway out to the beach area. The beach has areas of beautiful white sand and flat rocky ledges which are perfect for sunbathing. Bring suntan lotion and plenty of water.

Visit a Zulu Highschool

by windsorgirl

As part of our Drifter's Tour Itinerary, we made a visit to Ezifundeni High School in Zululand. The kids performed a song and dance for us. The music was energizing and the dancers were very enthusiastic. And, they expected nothing in return, they were as happy to meet us as we were them.We did leave a few trinkets behind with the principal, like pencils and toothbrushes, that they would use as rewards for the students.Again, this visit was organized for us, but if you get the opportunity yourself, it is well worth it. Experiencing the culture this way was much less contrived than viewing a "traditional dance performance" by professionals.

Johannesburg - Nelson Mandela Residence

by nxlink

A local Johannesburg guide showed me the home where Nelson Mandela currently resides. The yellow stucco house in located in Houghton, one of the nicer northern suburbs of Johannesburg. The house is not open to the public so you can only do a drive by tour. It was still very interesting to see where the stateman and Nobel Peace Prize winner calls home.

Namaqualand - Port Nolloth

by glennkasner

Port Nolloth is a small coastal town 708km north of Cape Town. Esablished during the "copper rush" it hasn't changed much in its existance of more than a century.Today it is the base for most of the diamond dredging operations on the West Coast and has the reputation of having the largest police force per capita in the whole of South Africa!Walking throught the streets of Port Nolloth one is reminded of the days of the wild west where life was slow and hard.
