by Jenniflower Nieu Bethesda is the Owl House, which was once the home of the eccentric sculptor Helen Martins. It is an eclectic space of all kinds of weird and wonderful figurines, sculptures, mirrors etc. This town still has no ATMs to withdraw cash and no street lights! Leave a Comment

by paradisedreamer Just after Big Tree heading towards PE you will come to a Shell service station. Park here and then take a walk along the boardwalks underneath the Paul Sauer bridge..... Leave a Comment

by Jenniflower The beaches all along the Wild Coast are simply spectacular. These are splendid for long walks and trails. Fine white sand that is so white you strain your eyes, and sea that is salty and blue, with crashing surf-loving waves. Leave a Comment

by Jenniflower The Outeniqua Trail is a world-renowned trail that thousands of people from all over the world come to complete every year. It is an area of unsurpassed beauty, where you experience the touch of wildlife in a special way. Come prepared with bird books, binoculars, good walking boots, a hat, sun cream, swimming costume/trunks... good outdoor wear! Leave a Comment

Cradock is a largeish Little Karoo town, in the midst of some harsh countryside... harsh but beautiful. It is primarily Afrikaans speaking, but they do cater for English-speaking folk as they get quite a few tourists here. They primarily visit TuisHuis, where I have stayed twice, last time being in January 2007. There is loads of character and charm in the town, but there is also much poverty apparent.. a seemingly cruel mix of the two. Leave a Comment

The Outeniqua Choo Choo train is a highly enjoyable steam train, that we took from George to Knysna, and back, on our honeymoon :) The trip took over 2 hours, each way, and was thoroughly enjoyable! Our most memorable photo was everyone leaning out of the train window as we were going over the bridge at Victoria Bay... heading toward the tunnel, with the steam streaming behind the train :) A super trip in the area, enjoyable for adults and kids alike! Visit Hogsback, the misty and magical village in a forest, where it is rumoured JRR Tolkein got his inspiration for Middle-Earth. *more info to come Leave a Comment

Canals by paradisedreamer At St Francis there are lots of canals and the houses are built close to the water with private jettys. Most canals are narrower than this one. This picture was taken from a very good Greek restaurant (can't remember the name though!). Leave a Comment

View towards the port by paradisedreamer The bay is huge and great for beachwalks. The sea (atlantic) can sometimes be very cold so it is not always suitable for swimming. December is the main month that South Africans go on holiday so it can get very busy at this time. Leave a Comment
