Once one of the holiday capitals of South Africa, Durban lies between the sunny beaches of the South Coast and the game parks of Zululand. Host to the Mr Price surf competition and home of your archetypal blond surfer, itıs a real rainbow city where myriad cultures meet. Visit Grey Street and the Indian Market for a taste of Indian culture far removed from Big Mac territory. Here street hawkers sell anything from fake Rolex watches to diced carrots. Grab a bunny chow, a few chilli bites and a packet of slap chips. Leave a Comment

Biltong hanging up to dry out by ratherton Biltong is basically dried meat and is something I remember from my childhood in Zimbabwe. Back then, we only had beef but now there is a whole range of different meats and flavours - beef, game, ostrich, kudu, chilli. Personally, I still prefer beef but it's worth trying the other types to see which you like the most. If you get hooked on it, it is possible to buy your own biltong maker. Leave a Comment

A Bunny Chow from Durban by GerryFM For a cheap, yet filling "meal" you have got to try a "Bunny Chow" when in Durban. Probably not everybodies cup of tea, but we love it! Perfect tucker after a heavy night on the town. There is a little dodgy looking take-out in the Overport area, known as Johnnys, that makes the best "Bunnies" in town. Basically a Bunny Chow, is a choice of curry (lamb, beef. mutton, beans, prawn, vegetable .... you name it) in a quarter , half or whole loaf of bread. All they do is slice a loaf of bread in half, scoop out the bread, then put the choice of curry into the part that has jsut been scooped out. After this they put the scooped out bits on top again, which absorbs all the juices. All that remains is to eat it. These are really delicious! Leave a Comment
