Plane- If your comming from Overseas , Best route would be from JHB (Johanesberg ) then down to Durban. Capetown also has regular Inflights. Have you ever thought about flying into Capetown , Embarking on a Train and slowly making your way to Durban . It takes around 2 days , and is one of the most peaceful ways to see the South African Country side. Numerous Bus Routes can be booked in advance into Durban from both Capetown and Johanesberg. (I don't recomend the trip , its long and tiring) The QU2 stops once in a while in Durban. Some famous ships disembark from Durban harbour on the way up to Madigascar and the Islands of Mozambeque.
Take a TAXI. Not your avarage Taxi mind you. More along the lines of a mini bus . Yes they are dangerous. But you have never lived until you have prayed for you life in one of thease Mini Bus's.
The will drop you off almost ANYPLACE. Ask rates before entering . Make sure you have NO camera's , or Jewlry , and if you can go with a local. They are the quickest and most efficent way around the city and surounding areas .BUT don't go into the Taxi Rank areas , Its highly dangerous.
Renting a car would be one of the best bets (and its very cheap ) One can get rented cars Directly from the Durban International Airport. Walking from the beach into the city center is possible , but its better to take a bus or other means of transport. Durban can get VERY hot and Humid.
