Hluhluwe Things to Do

  • Safari - Hluhluwe Game Reserve

Hluhluwe Game Reserve ( Umfolozi Park is adjoined) is brilliant. South Africa features far too many reserves to mention them all but this one is lovely and featured on several National Geographical progs on TV. I was lucky enough to witness a pride of lions attempting a kill (anyone remember one eye on the wildlife progs, well it was she), we were...

    Baz Bus

by Waalewiener Written Dec 30, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A Baz Bus is a 22 seater Mercedes (or other)
small size bus , the buses are very flexible.
The bus will pick you up at your door ,where you are lodging, and you will meet many new and interesting people on a Baz Bus.
You only need to buy a ticket to one destination, and you can get off and on the Bus whenever you like.
Because of all this flexibility the bus schedule would be hard to keep, in other words the Bus could be late at times.

    Crafts at Ilala

by GerryFM Written Oct 6, 2004

Situated in the town of Hluhluwe, Ilala Weavers is more than just a shop.

They have a craft village and museum, as well as a restaurant.

It is well worth a visit. Nice place to stop for lunch or afternoon tea.

What to buy: Hand Crafted goods, materials, beadwork etc.

What to pay: Is quite reasonably priced

  • Strict (pre)marital rules

Girls and boys are taught to be proud of their bodies. They are encouraged to interact when they are teenagers. But once engaged, the girls wear the beaded cloak and when married also the red hat. Fooling around is then over!

The beadwork is not just pretty. It symbolises many aspects and stages of life. For instane: when a girl gets engages, she makes a bead jewel for her fiancé.They can keep away illness or give protection.
