Don't rent a car use a private guide!
From St Lucia we used a guide to visit Hluhluwe and all the coast up to Kosi Bay. Since we used the guide's 4 X 4 there were no car hire costs. The guide showed us things we would never have found or spotted alone. He also took us along VERY remote sand tracks from Sodwana to Kosi, put us in a primitive but comfortable camp overlooking Kosi bay lake (better view than any other accomodation in the area, in my opinion) and cooked our evening meals over the braai. As an ex ranger from Hluhluwe he knew animals, insects, birds, medicinal plants etc. He's a nice guy called Charl Koen of Extreme Nature Tours in St Lucia.

TAKE YOUR OWN CAR -- BUT BE CAREFUL
Hans, Wim and I got around HLUHLUWE by Car. The roads are well maintained for self-drive, which we did. We all had a lot of fun "looking" for animals to "shoot" with our cameras. We played a game of who would be the first to spot an animal in the bush or trees and when we did see one it was "Impala at two o'clock" or "warthogs up ahead". I must admit that even though Wim was driving, he was still the best at finding the well-camouflaged animals.
There are also guided tours available, which is probably a good idea too, as we were disappointed that we didn't see any Elephants. They are very timid and hard to find, but I'm sure the guides know how to find them. Also the warden informed us as to what area there was a sighting of Elephant, but we still didn't find them.

Hire a Car in St. Lucia
It is possible to hire a car from Imperial Car Rental in St. Lucia located. When I was there over the summer they had a weekend rate that was really good. You can rent a Tazz 1.3 for R153 a day with 100 km per day free. The mileage isn’t much and you have to watch it, but the weekday rate is a ridiculous R295 per day. We hired the car Friday afternoon and returned it Monday night and still got the weekend rate.
If you really want to see the great parks in KZN you must have transportation and renting is much cheaper than taking a tour, especially if you have at least two people to break up the cost.
Location: St. Lucia town, on Mckenzie Street behind the petrol station.
