Howick Things to Do
Howick is a great location to visit - the falls, the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, the restaurants, the museum.... but especially the huge (for this small town) range of souvenir and locally made crafts. The area can get busy with tourists in season, but it is generally fairly quiet and you will not have a problem finding parking, an interesting museum, impressive views and great food.
Take a long walk through the museum to the frequently photographed sculpture which marks the site where he was captured in 1962.
Interestingly, as you walk down the long, paved walkway, your camera will "see" the image of Mandela's face before your eyes do!
We visited the capture site just a couple of weeks after Tata Mandela passed away, which made the experience that much more moving and poignant.
You are also in the Midlands Meander area and if you have time to spare, take a drive along one of the routes and visit some of the many and varied food, arts and crafts locations to purchase some interesting or unusual gifts. Some ideas which are close by are Midmar Dam, Granny Mouse's Country House, the Groundcover leatherworks and the hammock shop along the Curry's Post road, and the Karkloof Canopy Tours location for a zip wire experience amongst the indigenous forest trees. In Howick itself are the Howick falls, musuem and many souvenir shops.
The falls are THE reason why this place is an attraction for the tourists. The view is really impressive. This town is North-West of Pietermaritzburg. About 25km. Exit on the N3(South exit is the closest to the falls, but it doesn't really matter.)Related to:
