Tendele Camp: A Personal Chef !

As a result of leaving Durban on a Saturday morning and then making a few stops (Pietermaritzburg, Howick Falls, Winterton and Cathedral Peak) during the day, by the time we reached Royal Natal Park on Sunday morning our preparations had become a trifle tattered. After checking-in just before noon, we realized that we had best head back down to the nearby Park Hotel to see what we could pick up in the way of emergency supplies for our stay! Fortunately, the hotel store was able to supply us with a loaf of bread, a block of cheese, a can of spaghetti & meatballs, drink boxes as well as wine & beer! Whew, we were out of the woods! It was only later that evening, after our very enjoyable afternoon hikes through the Park trails, when the chill finally drove us inside our bungalow that we realized that we had a problem! The kitchen had neither a stove nor a hot-plate for food preparation. It...

Westbrook Beach Hotel: Very Attentive!

We met our Malawi-born waiter, Robert, when he served us for our first evening dinner. Once we got talking and realized that we were 'wantoks' (as they would say in Papua New Guinea), we got on like a house on fire. In the old colonial style, the menu was typed daily on an old manual typewriter. On this occasion it was Soup, then Fish, Beef Olives, French Salad, Roast Chicken & Vegetables followed by Apple Crumble and Custard for desert. When Sue protested that this would be too much to eat, Robert insisted that she must get her full sustenance like any good African woman should! He also explained that the portions were small so they should present no problem. He did allow her to forego the dessert! In subsequent meals, both here and in Winterton, we noticed that there seemed to be an African tradition that they always sat you at the table that you had picked for your first meal! The...
