Me at the Aliwal Shoal

The best thing to do here is dive! LaLa Manzi Dive Charters are my preferred operator and I have taken many dives with them to the shoal. They are next door to the LaLa Manzi Inn in Umkomaas and run a very professional operation. Launching from the beach or the Umkomaas river you will be taken some 7 km off the coast to dive this spectacular reef.
Make sure to book - since they are always very busy - especially during weekends and public holidays.

Sardine Run - The greatest shoal on earth

The Sardine Run
2 more images

Ever year during the winter month of July millions of sardines swim along the East Coast of South Africa following the cold currents from the South. Besides the millions of sardines, hundreds and thousands of sharks, dolphines, whales, seals and birds enjoy a feeding franzy of the largest and greatest movement of animals on earth.
The sardines get so close to shore that one can take them out by hand... an unimaginable event!

Aliwal Shoal - Caves

The Shoal consists of many caves, overhands and cracks in which many fishes and plenty of corals can be seen. It is a treat to simply sink to the ground at around 18 to 20 meters to explore and see what is hidden away.

Nice little Croc.

This is a park not to be missed. If you like crocodiles this is the place for you.Don't worry you can see them up close but they won't be able to get to you. The BIG Crocs , you can see by just scrolling around the nice wide walk ways and you are able to see the crocs being fed.The feeding times are 11.am and 3 pm. To see the baby crocs about7000 of them you will have to follow the signs to the water were they can only be seen from the walkways and the bridges, this park is 27 hectares. There is also a small natural history museum, and a rabbit enclosure and a little farm for chidren .
In the park you could see birds such as Hamerkop,Weaver, and Plover, and also Antelope and Vervet. Some monkeys at times.
Guided Tours are also offered and a skywalk above the forest is in the planning stages There is a restaurant that has Crocodile on the menu, and there is a a shop that sells Crocodile based products.Park is Open 8.30 am to 4.30 pm.

Aliwal Shoal - Moray

Many species of Morays can be found on the Aliwal Shoal. This one is the Magnetic Moray a small specimen that is quiet curious and always investigates if someone comes close.

Aliwal Shoal - Sea Star

Another beautiful sight was a sea star that hooked on the side of the reef. Interesting fact is that there are more then 6000 species around in the sea.

Aliwal Shoal - Turtle

From the surface suddenly this massive turtle emerged and dove with along side of us. She sank to the ground to eat sand as our dive master explained after the dive to better digest.

Aliwal Shoal - Ray

On the exploration of one of those caves we discovered this massive ray resting hidden away. The ray was undisturbed and did not move at all even with 8 divers watching.
