Pietermaritzburg offers a second opportunity to fly into the province. The KwaZulu Natal Capital offers a small airport where South African Airlink and charter airlines fly to. South African Airlink operates several flights a day from Johannesburg. Several car rental companies are available in the airport.
The airport is located along the N3 highway East of Pietermaritzburg.

To get to KwaZulu Natal you can take a tollroad to get there very fast. But if you are on a tighter budget you can also take an other road. Most roads are paved and good. And the unpaved roads are also good to drive.

We flew from Amsterdam to Johannesburg, South Africa, with KLM. To Durban with SAA.
Rent a car. We had a nice red Honda and the only difficulty in the beginning is driving on the left side of the road.
