Ever year during the winter month of July millions of sardines swim along the East Coast of South Africa following the cold currents from the South. Besides the millions of sardines, hundreds and thousands of sharks, dolphines, whales, seals and birds enjoy a feeding franzy of the largest and greatest movement of animals on earth.
The sardines get so close to shore that one can take them out by hand... an unimaginable event!

We were able to try a varied assortment of meals at Duma Manzi. Before our arrival we were asked to provide a list of any food allergies or anything we needed to avoid. Being six months pregnant, I had a list of note! We had our own chef personally tailor each meal to our request and every sitting was a taste experience.

Our arrival warranted a light lunch, so we were served a freshly baked bagel with pesto mushroom and salad. The flavours were exquisite and even though mushroom isn't my favorite treat, I ate it with gusto. That evening our three course meal started off with a roasted tomato and basil soup with french bread, a steak in mushroom sauce with potato mustard mash and roast veggies for main, and our dessert was almost too much for us to finish: a strawberry croissant gateaux. We washed it down with soft drinks and wine.

The following morning our breakfast was an assortment of fruit, muslei, breakfast cereals, muffins and fresh fruit juice followed by a cooked breakfast - done to perfection. As if we had any room left over from the night before!

Before we left, we were offered a light lunch - two courses - a wonderful puff pastry base, stuffed with olives, pesto, parmasan and rocket. The sweet was a lemon and basil sorbet. Overall an exceptional taste experience, but boy, it was way too much food in just over 24 hours!

If you are interested in going diving to one of the most spectacular dive sites on earth – Aliwal Shoal, you truly only have one choice when visiting Umkomaas or Scottburgh. Oceans Alive Dive Charter situated right next to the Lalamanzi Inn offers daily trips to the shoal. During my recent visit to the East Coast I did 29 sensational dives. With Carl the skipper and owner one is brought safely through the surf to the dive spots. Patrick the dive master has done more then 6000 dives on the shoal, and rest assured not only does he guarantee an awesome dive; he also has the most wicked sense of humour ensuring that diving really becomes fun.
There are not many dive regions on earth where you can dive various shark species. In June during 29 dives I encountered Ragged Tooth Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Blacktip Sharks, a Scalloped Hammerhead and even a Great White, sharks on almost every dive!
It was so good that I will be back soon! Thank you Carl, Patrick, Blessing and Tara!

Equipment: All equipment can be hired - OAD offers brand new ScubaPro grear!

Favorite thing: For easier orientation find enclosed a map of the area South of Durban. Easy access to the town is via the N2 highway which runs parallel to the coastline.
