  • Get a load of that sky! - Cape Town
Get a load of that sky!
    by GillianMcLaughlin
The Blue Peter lies all of 20 minutes from the Waterfront in Cape Town, following the coast road out west. Is sits at the foot of a tranquil little town, and has a beer garden that looks west, straight over Robben Island.

I cannot claim that there was anything spectacular about the bar in terms of drinks, music or food. But the location and the general laid back atmosphere made it my favourite hanging-out-of-an-evening watering hole!

They tell me thatm in season, it's a great whale-watching place... I'd loved to have seen a whale, but one evening gave me a sunset, the likes of which I've never experienced, and I doubt I'll ever experience again!

Come as you are!... it is Cape Town after all!

    The Drum Cafe: African Beat

The authentic African flavour of the Drum cafe creates the perfect atmosphere in which to experience a taste of Africa, not to merely witness, but to partake. The drum circle is a true reflection of how in traditional African settings, there is no longer an audience, each person gets their own djembe drum, and after a brief lesson on how to drum, beginners will, in no time be drumming fluently with our regular more advanced drummers. You will then become a part of the powerful rhythm of the drum circle. People from all walks of life, all cultures and all ages, up to 200 people drumming together, making music. Its great fun and a fantastic way to relieve stress.

    Anything goes

Occupying 6000 squared meters of land, Dockside Cape Town is situated on the banks of the Century City water canal development. Aside from its phenomenal sound system, the main dance floor inside Dockside boasts an incredible 350 000 watt laser and lighting system.

  • Although Cape Town's CBD generally shut's down at night, Long Street is where it all happens. There are numerous clubs and pubs that remain open till the early hours of the morning.

Varies from place to place but generally casual

  • Long Street is the place to be if you want to party in Capetown. It has different pubs, discos and places to eat something quick. Just walk around and go inside the place you find the best for you.

No coat required, but capetonians do like to dress to go out. A shirt and jeans it's ok. Don't even think of going out with shorts and tank tops. Either you won't meet anyone or you won't be able to go inside the pubs.

    Barleycorn Music Club: Live Music
  • Tip Rating:

  • Every Monday evening from about 8.30pm you can head down the River Club and listen to live music. The barleycorn music club has been running for 20+ years as a non-profit organisation with the sole aim of appreciation of live music. The diversity is from solo guitar, accapella, rock, jazz to reggae & classical.

There is a small door charge at the moment R20 and silence is asked for when the musicians are playing

Cool Runnings is a very fine place to spend an evening listening to live music, although by preference I'd wait for nice, warm weather so that the band could set up in the "sandbox", the courtyard surrounded by ersatz palm trees, thatched roofs, and lots of room to dance, or just to stretch out with some rum-based drink. Inside is fine, too, although things get crowded quickly and the smoke level rises alarmingly. The drinks are good. The food is passable, sufficient to keep you from getting truly plastered (though I'd stay away from the fries, personally).

  • Great place for young people to meet and have a few games of pool or just a drink.
This pool hall has about 200 tables and a balcony when you need a breather.
This pool hall is by no means a seedy joint one often associates with pool halls

  • Down at the waterfront, Quay Four is a good bar, they have live music at weekends and do decent food. There's 2 other bars, Mitchells and Ferrymans which are more like proper pubs, and a dangerous spot called Cantina Tequila.. no prizes for guessing the results of a night out there! There's a German bar in the new section of the Waterfront, it's the 'clocktower' section the beer is very good from memory.

Balduci's is a nice restaurant and there is a really good seafood place but the name escapes me, it's at the back near Balduci's facing the sea and the mountain.
For a typical cheap South African Burgers/Steaks & Ribs go to the Spur, it's always full of familys but the food is very good for the price.
There's a great coffee shop called Mug & Bean which do the best Muffins.

Away from the waterfront Camps Bay is a great spot to visit, will cost about €10 in a cab from town. Beautiful beach and a strip of top class bars and restaurants, for a great Steak (assuming your a meat eater) Theo's is the best in CT. Blues is a very cool spot too for food and drinks, they have music, generally Jazz & Blues stuff.
Other good drinking holes are Caprice at the other end of the strip and a place called 'La Med' which is technically in Clifton (Suburb next to Camps Bay) great for Sunday afternoon drinks or sunset drinks on a Thursday/Friday night.
There's been a lot of development since I was living there (3 years ago) and I know there's loads more places on that strip now but it's a wealthy suburb so you'll be mixing with Cape Town's beautiful people wherever you end up!

There are lots of good spots elsewhere, Green Point main road has a lot of good bars, News Cafe, Bhudda Bar, Buena Vista & Bar Cubana and there is a great Pizza place on Sea Point Main Road called Postichinos both are short Taxi Rides from the Waterfront.
Sea point main road can get a bit rough after dark so don't decide to go for a wander down any side roads!

In Cape Town city centre there is long street which runs up to kloof street, these have become cool backpacker hangouts so there are lots of places around, on the safety aspect some people would be a bit scared of this area at night but it's generally very busy with young travellers so you shouldn't have any problems.... If you do brave it there's a great Thai place called Yindee's at the top of Kloof st and cool runnings & Joburg are 2 of the better bars on long street.
