Kirstenbosch Gardens: THE PROTEA
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Protea is the national flower of South Africa. You will find different species in the Cape Good Hope nature reserve. These flowers are protected, so do not try to pick them. Seeds of these flowers can be found in local shops and they are not difficult to grow at home ( in a greenhouse).
    Do enjoy the beautiful colors

    West Coast: Paternoster

  • Fishing village Paternoster - Cape Town
    Fishing village Paternoster

The well kept secret is out. Paternoster used to be a small fishing village on the west coast with a hotel and a padstal.(a stall next to the road) At the padstal you could buy home-mad jams, bokkoms(dried salted fish), fresh bread etc. The hotel was the hotel.

Suddenly there is a boom in the property market and everybody wants a piece of Paternoster. Lots of new guesthouses and B&B's is a definite sign of the tourist interest in Paternoster.

Even though it is expanding it is still a tranquil, peaceful little village with beautiful beaches and interesting people.

    Wine Region: Franschhoek
  • Tip Rating:
  • Franschhoek is a lovely little about 85km from Cape Town in mid of the wine region. It's well know for its fantastic restaurant, but has some wineries aswell. It's the place where French Huguenots settled back in the 17th century and you'll find a monument and a museum dedicated to them in town.
We've had a great lunch at "La Petite Ferme", which has a great garden with splended views over Franschhoek and the valley.

Beaches: Noordhoek and it's long, white, pristine beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Noordhoek village, perched between Cape Town's longest stretch of beach and the dramatic and ever popular Chapman?s Peak Drive, has become even more popular in recent years with those seeking a more tranquil lifestyle. This is horse-land.. where there are quite a few stables and everyone is into their horses and their art. Yes, another arty part of Cape Town haha.

Noordhoek Farm Stall is a must-see with its stunning arts and crafts and delicious foods on offer. Red Herring is a favourite restaurant of ours here too, a bit pricey but well worth it.

Long Beach is a glimmering white beach, with an eight km stretch of sand, and its own shipwreck! You can go for camel and horseback rides on it, plus as its on the side where the sun sets, you are in for a treat at dusk! Due to rough currents, the beach is not that safe for swimming, but is very popular with the local surfers. For swimming, people generally go across the valley to Fish Hoek beach.

    ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM A little...
  • Tip Rating:
  • ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM
A little island in the middle of the bay, Robben Island can be seen fron the Table Mountain. Famous for having being the prison of Nelson Mandela for several years, this infamous prison and former leper colony was home to a generation of the senior statesmen of Africa (it was a men's only prison), incarcerated because of their political beliefs. Great views of the city and the Table Mountain.

    Beaches: Hout Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beautiful and quaint Hout Bay can be reached by three windy roads only... and over mountains... it is a little out of the way, and has the name 'Republic of Hout Bay because of it :)

The access road that runs from Camps Bay, offers a beautiful drive all along the sea form Hout Bay to Cape Town This is the side where the sun sets, so it's a good idea to have a cocktail/some wine handy :)

The Karbonkel Mountain lies to the one side of this protected valley, the well known Mount Sentinel to the other side (looking out to the sea), and the Constantia Mountains and Chapman?s Peak itself on the other side.

African Markets: Another market on the coastal roads
  • Tip Rating:

  • This was directly next to the sea on a small cliff, so the winds were beating hard when I was there. What the local's do is they drive up in their van's and car's, set up in the mornings and leave in the evenings.

There were not many people there, but the items on sale were really interesting as you can see from the picture. I ended up buying tons of little souviniers for relatives and friends as they were almost half cheaper than what you get in the city.

Next time you're out in Cape Town, rent a car and head on down the coastal roads. And becareful never to stop less than 5 feet from the car in front of you in the event you need to make a quick get-away.

Chapman's Peak is a much travelled and absolutely stunning drive, taking you from Hout Bay to the other side of the mountain along a windy and narrow road, coming out at Noordhoek (in the Fish Hoek valley). There has been extensive work done on it in the last few years as there had been some fatalities with rock falls, and so it has been made a lot safer, although this has taken away the natural element somewhat.

    Baine's Kloof ~ Tweede Tol
  • Tip Rating:
  • Baine's Kloof in the mountains in the Cape has one of our favourite camping spots, Tweede Tol.

The river here is crystal clear, has spectacular colouring, has a natural jacuzzi, many little marine animals, plus there's a waterfall a short hike away.

My hubby enjoys his fly fishing here! Bliss :)
