Hermanus, Cape Town
Driving to Hermanus, which is 122kms from Cape Town, on the coast- is a wonderful days outing. As well as passing charming old fishing villages (now very 'in vogue') you will pass a few nature reserves, which include many bird species and hippo. Stop anywhere along the way at one of the gorgeous beaches, and you may see whales, which frolic between June and November.
There is a fishermans market every Sunday, and fruit stalls along the way.
Seafood restuarants are amongst the best in the Cape.
Get yourself to an appropriately situated beach and enjoy.
Alternatively get to any of the Bays south of Capetown and you're in luck.
to do it with panache, book into one of the expensive well situated beach front hotel, with Whale View -of ocurse;
or go to Bientangs Cave Seafood Restaurant, pay hard currency and watch the whales
They say Hermanus is the place to go to watch whales... the weather's got to be just right for them to come in to the bay though... the day I was there there weren't any but it is a beautiful village. They say if you've got a house in Hermanus you've made it!!!
If you are driving west from Cape Town and have some time to spare its worth turning off the N2 onto the R44 (Clarence Drive) and taking the coast road to Gordon's Bay and following it round to where you join the road to Hermanus. The road parallels the coastline almost all the way with wonderful views and beaches.
At Betty's Bay you can stop off at Stony Point to see the Jackass Penguin colony. This is also a great place for land-based whale watching between May and December.
Hermanus is about an hour from Cape Town, but well worth the drive. In August - October it is famous for the whales that descend on its shores. It also has numerous wonderful shops and restauarants. Accommodation ranges from 5* to cosy bed & breakfasts. The local tidal pool is a great place for a safe dip in the ocean. The nearby Hamilton Russell Winefarm is a good choice for superb wine tasting and buying. Get friendly with a local and they will tell u the ins and outs.
Hermanus is approx 1 hour drive from Cape town. Take the N2 northbound or the R34 which is the scenic coastal drive. See my Hermanus page for more details
