Mama Afrika: Terrific African Drumming with Coke Chandelier

by jumpingnorman Written Feb 20, 2009

Mama Afrika is a very busy restaurant in Cape Town, and well-known among tourists and locals alike, offering nice music and fulfilling that Cape experience. Thus, you have to make sure you have a reservation before going here...if you do have a guide, he or she may set you up.

After the new democracy of South Africa was established more than 10 years ago, they built this restaurant on Long Street which is at the very heart of the inner city of Cape Town.

The restaurant offers traditional African cuisine. Enjoy eating while you listen to tribal drumming and stare at its unusual 500-bottle Coca Cola chandelier.

If for anything, try to visit this restaurant just because of its history and close association with the new South African sentiments post-Apartheid.

This is a happening loud african restaurant that has a live african band drumming, singing, and a generally cool time....don't expect this to be a quiet evening !!!

Favorite Dish: Any of the local dishes especially meat are always good, I'm a veggie so can't comment on the meaty stuff but all the dishes are hearty !!!

Mama Afrika: Spring Bock, Ostrich and more

The Mama Africa is listed in every guide of Cape Town. Consequently there is a high percentage of tourists among the guests. It really is a nice place, though. The prices are a little bit too high.

    Favorite Dish: Spring Bock

Good place to go to experience African food, you can get local cape malay food such as bobotie or try food from surrounding african countries such as mozambique chicken livers or morrocan lamb. You can sample wild game as well kudu, springbok or crocodile.
They also have live african music and the occassional band

    Mama Africa: African Experience

by Airpunk Written Jun 5, 2008

This place is one of the most popular restaurants in Cape Town, so it is recommended to reserve well in advance. Locals visit this restaurant, but it is more a tourist thing. What you get is exotic dishes in a nice atmosphere. Live music is often played at the restaurant, in that case a small charge will be added to your table. Food mostly consists of exotic meat like crocodile or kudu, but “normal” meat as well as vegetarian dishes are served too. If you are looking for a place to spend a nice evening, get a somewhat stereotypical african experience and eat things you have never eaten before, then that’s the right place. Mama Africa is mentioned in many guides as a kind of “must do” when in Cape Town and there’s no reason to disagree.

Favorite Dish: I had kudu with a couple of vegetables and mealiepap. A mix of exotic meat and typical south african food.

    Mama Afrika: Live music!

If you want to have the chance of eating some "african" food is one of the best places, you won't find something like this at the waterfront where all the restaurants are very european. The best thing at this place is that they usually have an African band playing at night with a lively atmosphere. The best way to live the place is by taxi, I wouldn't recomend you to walk for too long at night.

    Mama Africa: Awesome African

by didgeridorien Written Dec 29, 2010

Where to start? The restaurant looks African, you can buy African art there and there's live African music playing during dinner (but you get billed for it - shame). The food is amazing and we got some free drinks because we had to wait, so that lifted our spirits!

Favorite Dish: I had the mixed grill, which is expensive, but you get meat from crocodile, kudu, ostrich, springbok and sausage.
