Afternoon Tea isnt really a meal, its an indulgence, a delight, naughty but oh so nice.
Afernoon Tea at the Mount Nelson surpasses naughty and borders on wicked, the Windsor table in the Tea Lounge practically groans with the weight of the delicious treats loaded onto it every day between 2.30 and 5.30 and you indulge in style to the accompaniament of live music from the piano
Choose a table in the Lounge or the Conservatory, order your choice of tea and then pick up a plate and make your selection from the goodies spread before you. Tiny sandwiches only two bites big, miniature quiches and savoury pasties bursting with flavour, and fine cheeses....then a dilemma..... do you return to the buffet for more savoury treats or do you start to sample the sweet things ? tiny cream horns coated in chocolate, fluffy scones, an amazing mouthwatering selection of fancy cakes and tarts, gateaux and fruit pastries
you try to select just a few but each looks nicer than the next and you seriously wonder how you will eat them all but you give it your best shot, and you carry on eating till you havent got room for another crumb
so there you are, having eaten a `meal` you didnt need, and one with a zillion calories to boot, was it worth it ? oh yes..... its a great experience and The Mount Nelson is one of the top places in the world to do it and very reasonably priced compared to places like The Ritz in London at only R125. One tip if you do try it DONT eat lunch

you dine in elegance at the Mount Nelson in the lovely Cape Colony restaurant as live music is played - not too loudly, you are still well able to hear your companion
the food is absolutely first class, the a la carte menu is pricey but the `Winter Warmers` one was an absolute bargain at R185 for three courses and an aperetif, we had the lamb as our main course and it was the best I have ever tasted
the service was excellent, unhurried friendly and efficient
Favorite Dish: the second night I had steamed cape rock lobster and sautéed scampi with lime fennel emulsion and caviar dumplings which cost R295, it was very very good served with a side dish of spinach
as a starter I had caesar salad which was a very large helping and I couldnt finish it
