On a daily basis most Capetonians pass or see Signal Hill from wherever they are in the city. It always fascinates me to hear why Capetonians think the hill is called as such. Most say that it is because the noon gun fires a signal from hill. This answer would be incorrect.
The reason why the hill is called Signal Hill is because in bygone years a signalman was permanently stationed on the mountainside which has a great vantage point over the whole of Table Bay. The signalman's duty was to warn the castle of the approaching ships that were coming into the harbour. When ships were sighted a coded system of flags and cannon shots were used to provide the relevant information about the ship as well as it nationality. Amongst others a shot was fired for every ship that was spotted and a flag was hoisted at the same time of the shot being fired. When the ship was visually identifiable a red flag was hoisted if it was an enemy vessel attacking the harbour. This signal brought every man to the harbour so as to defend the shoreline.
The view from here is absolutely beautiful and Guess I gotta say its a must see on list of places to go.
Signal Hill Sunsets.
Signal Hill has some of the most stunning view of the city. On the view point there is a beautiful picnic spot where you can relax and wait for the sun to go down and then you will see some of the most Breathtaking sunsets in the world.
We were in a group so we took a taxi up to Signal Hill which cut the cost for us, you can then order the taxi to come back for you at what ever time you like.
One of Signal Hill's main attraction is the Gun battery just below the mountain top. At 12 noon every day the cannon gun is fired. Admission is Free.
To get to the Gun Show you have to go via Bo Kaap (Military Street), then watch out for the sign-post on Buitengracht Street to show you the way.

Signal Hill view 2
If you walk up to the left of the parking area if you are facing Table Mountain you will get spectacular views over the harbour, table bay and the waterfront. And the best thing is that it is all for free!!
Signal Hill views
The views are the reason to come up here. From the parking there is a deck overlooking Mouille Point and down the peninsular. Sunset is stunning up here as the sun shines between Table mountain and Lions head witht Twelve Apostles in the distance.
The 350m high Signal Hill separates Sea Point from the main part of the city. There are magnificent views from its summit.
At noon every day, except Sunday, a cannon is fired from halfway up the slopes of Signal Hill. It can be heard all over town, as was onced used by the burghers to ensure they were keeping the right time.
Go to the top of Signal Hill
One of the best possible ways to orient yourself in Cape Town is to go to the top of Signal Hill, from which the Noon Gun is fired each day -- albeit a little farther down the hill. The views over the sea, the city, and Table Mountain are simply superb. There's usually an ice cream truck up on top, too, especially if it happens to be a hot day. We were taken up there directly from the airport by a friend who picked us up, so I'm not altogether sure whether there is bus service or not. I'm not sure it would be worth the taxi fare if you are reduced to that possibility.
Signal Hill is the rounded Hill that lies in front of Lions head. There are picnic tables at the top but it can be very windy.
