look, a plane !

I had never heard of Nationwide before researching our trip, but I read good reviews about it and was amazed by the great prices to travel business class from Gatwick
the plane was rather dated, but was very comfortable, the food was the best I have ever eaten on a plane, the service excellent and the timing of our 10 1/2 hour flight meant that we could sleep all night and arrive at Johannasberg Airport refreshed where we transferred to a local flight to Cape Town
our return journey was just as good, this was the best flight we have ever had
Nationwide flies from Gatwick North Terminal in the UK, and operates domestic and international flights in Africa, I can definately recommend Nationwide if flying to South Africa

KULULA

Kulula must be the worlds funniest airline, what other airline tells you durung the safety briefing that if you are caught smoking in the toilet during the flight you will be made to sit on the naughty seat on the wing ? announcements were fun not boring and made us laugh
I suppose if you fly regularly with Kulula the jokes become a tad stale, but we just flew with then twice, to Port Elizabeth and back to Cape Town, Kulula is a no-frills budget airline but the seats are comfortable and we had enough legroom

Can go direct to Cape Town

Years ago, Cape Town's airport had a tiny itnernational section. Tiny means about 2 international flights per day. Most of the external flights were via Johannesburg. Since then, the city's itnernational terminal has expanded and there are more flights. If you are going to visit Cape Town only, it might pay you to come directly to the city. Only use Johannesburg if it is necessary.

Cape Town Airport

Cape Town Airport is two different worlds: the international arrivals bit (clean, modern, well laid out) and the rest of it: international departures and the domestic terminal - crampled, dark, chaotic, sweaty. Disgraceful.

There is a tourist information desk in international arrivals, and is an efficient place with useful shops, clearly marked areas, good signs....how it should be. The rest makes Lagos Airport look well-designed.

South African Airways

We flew from Zurich via Jo'burg to Cape Town by South African Airways which is in my opinion one of the best airlines.

It was a pretty long flight, but the crew did their best to make it as comfortable as possible.

Get on one of the many minibuses which stop wherever passangers want to get off. It's a pretty cheap way to get from one place to another.

Well , this tip is mainly for those who travel from or near Argentina (Chile, Uruguay). This is the cheapest way to travel to South Africa. The flight was very comfortable, and the plane huge, it travels just twice a week, so the tickets are not so easy to get, book in advance.

Something I was not aware of untill recently - if you are a Dinerscard holder, you can use the airport lounge whilst waiting for your flight to depart at no cost to yourself. Make use of it, it is absolutely worth it if you have quite some time to spend at the airport.

CPT

Malaysian Airlines have twice weekly flights between Buenos Aires to Cape Town ( 7 hours over night ) and return ( nine hours and during the day )..
Malaysian hospitality and wonderful service.
When you arrive at CPT, the immigration and customs are truly a breeze and you come out clutching your bags or wheeling your luggage. There is a good tourism office from where you could get information about anything to do with cape town but usually our needs are about a place to stay..
also bank with ATM machine and transportation companies to town

Where do you want to fly?

Check out www.kulula.com a no-frills airlines to Jo'burg from Cape Town.

Also watch SAA's website for two ranges of bargain
fares introduced to compete with no-frills airline kulula.com. One is the "nite club" available on its late night flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays for R695 + taxes. It flyes from Cape Town to Jo'burg.

The second range is "dazzling" and the routes will be the same as kulula and will fly between Cape Town and Jo'burg and Durban.

These two ranges wil be permanently available, but will be subject to conditions.
