Trains: Train Transport - still to be upgraded!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The train transport in Cape Town is definately not much to talk about! So much still needs to be upgraded in this area. Trains running from Cape Town to Bellvile, Strand and Stellenbosch, which also heads in the direction of 'The Grand West Canino", can sometimes be dangerous with the amount of thiefs ripping off handbags, cellphones etc. Lately, there seem to be more and more security guards on trains running in this direction. Still the locals taking this route to the canino by train are very careful. Many of the trains running in all directions are also never on time, so don't depend on any train arriving at a specific time!!! State of the trains? Well, another problem. There is grafitti on nearly all the trains! A huge problem for Metro-rail. The safest train is the one running in the direction from Cape Town to Simons Town. Bookings are normally made on this train, where breakfast and lunch is served. If you are a backpacker, you can enquire at the Cape Town Station for more information about this special train. There are also the trains heading in that direction without the meals.

    Car / Taxi: CAR TRAVEL.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Self-drive is very common in South Africa with generally good quality roads and they drive on the left (good for Brits, not so good for other Europeans & Americans). Cape Town and the Peninsula are quite easy to get around with distances allowing day trips from Cape Town across the Peninsula. The roads outside of the city are generally spacious and virtually empty.

With the arrival of our new trains, let us all hope that the grafitti on our trains will stop. It is a real pleasure to take a ride on these new trains. It is more spacious thus accomodates more place for standing passengers. The design, based very much on the European metro trains, certainly looks much more updated.

    Buses: Moving between Cities
  • Tip Rating:
  • A popular means of travelling from city to city is the Baz Bus. It operates on a hop on hop off basis whereby you purchase a ticket for a particular route and can get off anywhere along that route - do what you want to do and catch another Baz Bus to continue your journey. There is apparently no time limit on your ticket as well.

    Air Travel: Back to Vietnam
  • Tip Rating:
  • While in Cape Town why not take a sightseeing flip in a Vietnam War vintage Bell Huey helicopter?Potential passengers have to join the Huey Club at a cost of R750. They may then at any stage during the year ahead, fly in the Huey on a simulated combat mission. The first Huey Club flight took place on December 22, 2002 . Flying takes place from the Waterfront Heliport. Initially, flights took place at low level up the coast but due to the noise factor, the built-up areas are transited at 1000 feet to the GF area then the sortie is flown at low level. Most flights are undertaken with 14 passengers and two crew and to feel the part, passengers can wear replica flak jackets and goggles

    Buses: Go Topless
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best way to orientate yourself in Cape Town is to take the Topless double decker bus that operates on a hop on hop off basis around Cape Town. They stop at many of the main tourist spots so you can get off and explore at your own pace.

On arrival at Cape Town's International airport, you do not have to jump into the first taxi you see. Taxis are more convenient, but expensive. Ask where the information centre is, and ask for the shuttle bus service counter. There are more than one shuttle bus service and the fee is quite reasonable. The one I know of is called..."Way to Go". The drivers are friendly and will drop you at your hotel, home or wherever you want to dropped off. This is also handy to know when you want to be fetched from any destination within the vicinity of Cape Town. I last heard that they drive as far as Paarl and do special trips along the Garden Route. Another good shuttle bus service is the City Hopper. e-mail:citihop@iafrica.com. These airconditioned shuttle busses are a pleasure to drive in.

Car / Taxi: A car is a must
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cape Town is one of those cities where you really need your own transport. Even within city limits there is no extensive or useful public transport system and getting to and around the peninsula, the Winelands or the Atlantic coast would be next to impossible without a car. Car rental is not expensive in South Africa, petrol is cheap and driving is a pleasure, even in the cities.

    Buses: Intercape Mainliner to Windhoek
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best way to go to Windhoek from Capetown is this wonderful modern bus, many miles above the average african standards. You have to check-in your luggage, that goes in a little van behind the main bus. Once inside, you have stewardesses offering you drinks, blankets and "plane-like" facilities. It takes nearly 19 hours to arrive. There's no train alternative. On the way, the bus stops every 3 hours or so during daytime. Leaves CapeTown at noon and arrives in Windhoek at 6-7 am next day.
