Air Travel: Cape Town has now a completely...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cape Town has now a completely rebuilt airport and is served by all major carriers. From London it takes about 11hrs non stop. On this journey it makes sense to upgrade to business (BA has full lenght beds)as there's no timedifference with continental Europe e.g. wake up to a full day upon arrival!
Maximum freedom by renting a car there's also organized tours to be had aplenty at good value for money. Shop around at the tourist office near main station.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Most major Airports around the World have flights into capetown.
WELL. if you want a good scare take the local Mini Bus Taxi's. They are actualy very efficent , just ASK how much the fare is FIRST , should be around R3- R5 ) If they want more , tell them to go someplace else . That is fares around teh City Bowl. The taxi's can take your anywere around the city. Just ask. You can spot them (or hear them more like it ) They ussaly drive like maniacs and hoot and scream out the windows for clients. Just be prepared for a REAL FAST and fun ride.
There are Buss's and one can also take the trains to other parts of South Africa . If going to Durban or JHB , rather than fly take the train , that is if you have a few days to spare. Its very relaxing (Capetown to Durban takes around 2 days ) and JHB should be a day . Nice way to see the scenery (During the day that is) as you relax in your Private compartments.
Last time i went by train it was cheaper than Airfare.
Don't forget you can go out sailing for the day , or even catch Cruise liners up to Durban.
There are also options of going on Mountain Bike Trails with other tourists. They drive you to areas and you can pedela round the mountains.

  • Tip Rating:
  • A great way of geting around is calling a 'rikki's' it's a taxi service that's cheaper than the usual taxi but make sure you have time as they pick up and drop off quite a few people on the way. ah yes and it's more like a little truck so and not much padding on the seats! So watch out for those bumps!

  • Tip Rating:
  • The easiest and cheapest way to get around in Cape Town is by mini taxi's. You can get on from the street or at the taxi rank. The taxi drives when its filled.
But I wouldn't reccommend the mini taxi's after dark.

  • Tip Rating:
  • I fly to Cape Town on British Airways, which has direct flights from London. From the US, you can take South African Airways but I think you have to go via Johannesburg, which is out of the way.
You can enjoy central Cape Town on foot and by taking taxis. However, if you want to see things that are a little farther out (Kirstenbosch, Cape of Good Hope, wine country), it's much better to get a rental car. We rented an economy model from Imperial for about US$20 per day. Driving is easy, once you get used to driving on the left side of the street, and the roads are very good.

  • Tip Rating:
  • You can get to Cape Town by anyway you want. Many large international airlines fly here directly and it is increasingly becoming a popular stopover for cruise liners.
Walk, train, bus, taxi, car, bicycle, etc, etc. Be very careful where you go after dark. Ask first before you venture into the streets.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Some hostels offer free pick-ups from Cape Town airport otherwise there are pleny of taxis touting for trade.
Car rental is quite expensive but we found a good deal on the internet. However the SA Youth Hostel Association had some very competitive deals so check out their internet site or e-mail one of the official hostels.

    Air Travel: 10000 km nonstop
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of old Cliffie's trips to South Africa involved one of the longest flights he has ever taken: more than 10000 km nonstop from Hong Kong to Johannesburg. That flight was with Cathay Pacific, but for his other visits to South Africa old Cliffie flew South African Airways. They always got him there safely, in comfort and on time. What more can you ask from an airline?

  • Tip Rating:
  • A cheap way of getting around Cape Town is the Rikkis. It's a three-wheeled taxi that covers all of Cape Town.

    Trains: Metro Railways
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you use our public transport system, please try and use it during peak hours when there are lots of other commuters around as we have a lot of muggings happening on the trains. If you cannot then please look for the compartments where the security personell is located and travel in that wagon
