Hi, if anyone is thinking about visiting Stellenbosch you should definitely visit www.stellenboschshops.co.za this site lists all the hotspots in and around Stellenbosch with all their contact details.
A very small market (about 20 stalls, all filled to the brim) specializing in local crafts. They mostly sell wood crafts, african paintings and jewellery (mostly beadwork). This is an ideal spot to buy memoirs or gifts to take back home.
Please note that there is another market in the same street, located at the Taxi ranks, selling the usual fake sunglasses, etc (not recommended!!).
Once you've hunted through the open market stalls which are situated adjacent to the town common, make a visit to Karoo Classics. They have a wide selection of excellent local crafts. Depending on your taste they have a wide selection of animal skin rugs (including zebra, springbok), cushion covers, wallets, purses etc.
OK, so the term "slagtery" may conjure up images other than beef jerky.
But this family run butchery makes its own biltong, and is so fresh the flavour jumps right out at you. You haven't had real biltong until you come here.
