Black Steer: Reliable meat restaurant

by Jenniflower

I have been quite a few times, it is a favoured steakhouse chain in South Africa. They are a slightly upmarket chain, where the food is good quality and service just fine. It is a tad expensive here, but you will have a good meal. Guaranteed. One particular occasion stands out...It was my sister’s birthday and she had invited 18 people along to celebrate. Of the 18 people, 14 decided to have pork spare ribs!!! They are reknown for their ribs and so I guess we weren’t too surprised. The funny thing was, when we had all finished our ribs (and they were large racks, that bent up a bit), prior to the waitron retrieving the empty plates, we took a photo… of 14 plates along this long table, with lots of empty ribs!We looked like a bunch of ferocious carnivores!Other dishes are also good, but ribs are a personal favourite here.

Tings & Times - Pretoria: Funky, easygoing vibe -

by kismet270

Tings is a reggae bar with an amazing menu. printed on newspaper. It is great value for money and an awesome chilled out vibe. Vegetarians must try out the potato dish. I have forgotten the name but it is easy to find on the menu. I think it is cheaper to buy there then to prepare at home. So tasty. For no vegetarians, the beef brandy pita is delisious too. Or the chicken livers starter. (I spent alot of time here)

Spur: Steaks at a good price!

by HispanicYob

The service was good, although I think our waitress was new because she looked confused when we were asking her what we wanted. We got our food and enjoyed it very much. It was a clean restaurant and I enjoyed my first South African dining experience. The place is very American Old West themed. The interiors were brown with tile and hence the title "Spur" for relating to it. The portions were somewhat small, for American tastes anyways. But I still enjoyed it. I got the Spur Fillet, which was a juicy and tender steak cooked medium (the way I like it) and served with small onion rings (not the kind I'm used to but still very good) and I forgot now which else. There was a picture of it on the menu and it looked so good I had to try it. I'm glad I did.

How to assemble a delicious instant picnic!

by CatherineReichardt

Many of my tips make reference to picnics - partly because I like picnicking, partly out of economy, and partly because one of the few things I have learned from motherhood is that it is wise never to venture forth with small children without emergency provisions! So, how do you assemble an instant, delicious, value-for-money picnic? Easy - you find your nearest Woolworths!Woolworths is to South Africa what Marks & Spencers is to the UK. The name is confusing, as it actually has no link to the Woolworths in the USA, Australia or Britain (the latter of which was a fixture of my childhood and is sadly no more). Woolies is a veritable retail institution, and a much-loved purveyor of aspirational lifestyle goods to the South African middle and upper classes (myself included!)Everything at Woolies (clothing, homeware, groceries) is of excellent quality and reasonably priced, but we're talking...

Self grilling

by Gili_S

Of course if you are on a safari road and campings a self cooking and grilling is essential part of your diet. No problems to get in the camp site fresh food and meat from the store and then just be sure to have with you a cooker or wood for the grill and you are on for the fest :)

Olive & Oil: Best restaurant

by Gili_S

Restaurants and food in South Africa are of a high quality in wine, food and services. One of the best one we've been to is this Olive & Oil in Durban. The dinner meal was delicious and we had fantastic red wine as well. On this occasion it was exceptional for me but I even ordered dessert this time which was excellent as well. And, of course, the very friendly service, even if was sometimes a bit too formal, but that place has its class and in the end they were even posing for a staff photo :)

Lodges food

by Gili_S

If you book a stay in a private reserve lodge the dinner is included, as in such places there are no restaurants or cooking facilities. You will be invited to dinner with the other guests which is usually included some local dishes which might be a bit strange at first but this is part of the adventures.
