Mama Africa: Be sure to try the Bok & Kudu

by hurley_m

We loved this restaurant. The food and the ambience was authentically African, the Bok and Kudu on the menu were a must alongside a stunning variety of locally produced vegetables excellently served. Visited there on a Thursday night ( without a reservation.. unwise ), had to sit and eat at the bar which did not detract in any way from our experience. The service was fast efficiently and friendly and the music from the group ABAVUKI was astonishing. Their drums combined with trumpet and trombone mixed with vocals from a young male lead singer could have graced a stage anywhere in the world. Without any sound system or amplification this lead vocalist could almost drown out the drums and other instruments. What a voice and what a talent ! If you are in Capetown dont miss 'Mama Africa' I loved the way the food was served. Nobody in our party of four was unhappy with their meal

Several Restaurants: Cape Town

by PierreZA

In my opinion, no other city in South Africa can match Cape Town and surroundings when it comes to quality restaurants. I wrote tips on a few which I visited recently, and list a few here which I visited not that recently.Blues: A contemporary restaurant in Camps Bay with great views of the sunset over the Atlantic. Very good seafood. The Promenade, Victoria Road, Camps Bay, Tel: 021 438 2040Beluga: A restaurant where you can enjoy great fusion dishes. Very good seafood and grills. An upmarket feel. The Foundry, Prestwich Street, Green Point, Tel 021 418 2948Constantia Uitsig: Very good food and a very good wine list. A magnificent setting, with views of the mountains and vineyards. I can definitely recommend this restaurant.Constantia Uitsig, Spaanschemat River Road, Constantia Valley, Tel 021 794 4480La Colombe: This is currently the no1 restaurant in Cape Town (and most probably South...

Dish at the Rex Hotel: Dining @ Dish

by Leader-of-the-Pack

Dish Restaurant Knysna is a stylish Bistro style rendezvous spot suitable for a night out with friends or a romantic evening with a lover. It's sophisicated atmosphere is quite unique in Knysna's small sea-side setting. The menu is priced fairly and so is the wine list. And it has something for everyone - fish, pasta, steak, etc. I was there over dinner, but I believe they serve breakfast and lunch too. The Braised Lamb Shank is such delicious comfort food when the weather is foul. We hadn't had much red meat while sailing and I'd been dreaming about it. It was tender, tasty and a fair size portion. Together with the red wine and fireplace, it was the perfect evening.

Steak

by didgeridorien

It is relatively cheap to go out for dinner in South Africa. Steaks are very popular, available in huge portions and very affordable. If you get the chance, defenitely try ostrich, kudu, crocodile, springbok and any other game meat. It's really tasty, I loved it!

BRAAI !!!!

by DAO

A Braai is social happening and culinary experience you will find here in South Africa. The word Braai (rhymes with ‘cry’) is Afrikaans for ‘barbecue’ or ‘roast’. To me it translates as simply delicious. You also get to burn stuff to make your meal. Most grocery stores have all your Braai supplies. That includes firewood. It gives you a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of South Africa, eat delicious grilled food and legally start a big fire and not get into trouble. Enjoy Boerwoers (a large grillable sausage), Texas Steak (a pre-marinated massive beast of a steak available at Shoprite grocery stores) and beer underneath the stars. Alternatively cook & eat anything you can buy, kill or get your hands on.

African and Afrikaaner: Native Cuisines

by Jim_Eliason

South Africa has fantastic food ranging from the indigenous foods to fusions cuisines brought by the settlers. The staple of indigenous cuisine is the yam. The Dutch settlers (afrikaaners) also brought a unique cuisine to the country. Favorite dish - Peri Peri Chicken
