Ocean Basket: Ocean Basket

by pmarshuk

This is a chain of restuarants and I've only been to the ones in Heramnus and Knysna. But the Kingclip in Heramnus was superb. Very tasty, very good sized portions and (to somebody from the UK) extremely cheap. Even with numerous bottles of wine we never seemed to be able to spend more than £10 per head. Baby Kingclip

Westbrook Beach Hotel: On the Indian Ocean

by Bwana_Brown

At the Westbrook Beach Hotel on the Indian Ocean just north of Durban. It was run by a very nice family and they had a long-time staff of dedicated employees. We stayed 4 nights for $400 Canadian and found it to be a very relaxing base from which to see the surrounding area.Right on the Indian Ocean - the waves were roaring in constantly and crashing on the shore. We had a ground floor room and it was fantastic to be able to step out onto the lawns and wander down to the small rocky cliff overlooking the sandy beach. Instructions were to keep the TV on at all times so its internal heat would keep the salty air from corroding its circuits! We elected to get the pre-set Dinner menu (a different mixture of dishes each night) because we are not fussy eaters. It was a real pleasure to experience the services of the staff and the attention that they paid to small details. We had some great...

MAMA AFRICA: An introduction to African cuisine in Kaapstad

by ronaldpk

We went to this restaurant after our arrival to Kaapstad. I must admit that we were very naive as we were quite scared to go out after hearing all these horrible stories about the crime rate. We decided to ignore our fear and walked out of our Youth Hostel on Long Street and had a dinner at Mama Africa Restaurant. It was quite amazing as they have a regular band playing real African music from the Equatorial part of the continent. The restaurant has a quite charming decoration as it looks like a sort of African hut inside with different animals and masks on the walls. You can also hang out by the bar and get in trance while listening to the rythms of Marimba music! Do not miss out some indigenous food - Crocodile steak with Satay sauce, Ostrich steak, Kudu steak ( local antelope), Boobootie ( Afrikaner meat pie), great seafood ( I had prawns), superb Cape wines from local wineries. This...

The Africa Cafe: A Real African Feast!

by caslu

Be prepared for a real (and filling) treat when you visit this place. It's pretty much an all you can eat sampling of dishes from various African countries. You eat, they bring more, you eat again, they bring more, you're stuffed to the gills, they bring more... and it's all great! The staff was friendly and the restaurant's decor, combined with the African style costumes made for a delightful dining experience. Our personal favorite was the Malawi Mbatata Cheese and Sim Sim Balls - Sweet potato and cheese rolled in sesame seeds. These bite sized morsels were absolutely delicious and I kept ordering more and more of them. Don't worry though, if you don't like it they'll bring something else that you will like - guaranteed!

The food in Sotuh Africa is of a very high standard. The food itself is excellent and the portions are always healthy! Seafood is great all over the country. Sometimes the service isnt quite excellent but who cares when it is sooooo cheap!
