ACKERMANS STORES.: ACKERMANS STORES.

by PEE-WEE

WELCOME TO ACKERMANS The Ackermans Success story began in 1916 when Gus Ackerman opened the very first store in Wynberg, Cape Town, setting a benchmark for price competitiveness that few could match. By 1960 the Ackermans chain had shown promising growth and was sold to Greatermans. Towards the end of the 70's Ackermans changed hands once again and was sold to Edgars who maintained its successful price discounter position. When Pepkor acquired Ackermans in 1984 there were 34 stores across the country. Pepkor were quick to realise that the strategy of adding value to the low price formula would better position Ackermans for growth, and it was at this point that Ackermans began its present period of exceptional growth. By the turn of the century Ackermans had grown to over 200 stores across Southern Africa, catering to all value conscious consumers. The new millennium heralds even bigger...

shop till you drop, or run out of money

by africaking

In South Africa, there are many styles of shops selling almost anything you could ever want. They have department stores selling electronics, furniture, clothes, toys, gardeningand all other kinds of stuff. They also have Woolworths there (not the same as in UK) which I believe is run in conjunction with Marks and Spencers(UK store)Prices are good if exchanging foriegn currency.

Local crafts all the way!!

by jenniferhen

Along the side of the road in the Drakensberg Mountains was a bunch of local crafts for sale by the locals. We stopped off to check the prices and quality. Prices were excellent and the people selling were a blast! It was alot of fun bargining with them, you could even through in a coke to lower the price down and I found the quality to be excellent. We bought the wood carving of 2 giraffe's but as these can not easily fit into a backpack we had to ship them home and had a hell of a time finding a box to fit them. They took around 2 months to get to Canada as we sent them surface. (Hey we are on a budget!!) About half of much as you pay in a store with the same crafts. Unfortunately if you do not have a car, you will have a difficult time finding this spot.

On this photo you can see the girl who is making the fresh juices at the Fruit & Veg City. If you love fresh juices (I wonder who doesn't??), you should definitely not pass them. At least have a little to try!

Fruit and Veg City: Fresh fruit and vegetable stores

by Travelchili

I did a lot of driving in South Africa and came across this wonderful fruit and vegetable store in many towns/cities. I was always looking out for it because everything you get from there is very fresh and to my opinion very cheap (compared to a regular store, for example). Fruits and vegetables. But ALSO fresh juices. They have juice machines there, so you can take your own bottle and they make the fresh juice for you - very affordable and soooo delicious!!

Woolworths: Great Cottons!

by DesertRat

The South African Woolworths bears no resemblance to the US FW Woolworths. This is a quality clothing chain that offers great quality and very good prices. They're located in all reasonably large towns and cities throughout the country. The cottons they sell are excellent, both for men and women.
