Greenmarket Square: AFRICAN SHOPPING MALL AT GREENMARKET SQUARE

by ronaldpk

It's really a paradise for African art! You have vendors from different parts of the country and they have beautiful objects to sell. The trick is that you have to bargain a lot as they will try to rip you off if you're a tourist. But don't lower the price too low as they will get offended. Just be firm and you will pay the price you want. It's also a great place to listen to the "Click" languages. I felt in another world when I listened to locals talking to each other and clicking like grass hoppers! Arts & Crafts, textiles, masks, ostrich egg shells, bone rings, framed pictures, t-shirts, watches, herbs, jewelry, et.c. I got my African mask for R90, my sister-in-law got her bone ring for R30, a beautiful textile with animal motifs for R120. Bargain a lot!!!

Shopping and Civic Amenities: Shopping and Civic Amenities

by Kurtdhis

There is an abundance of western style shopping malls in all the bigger towns and all the cities. Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban boast huge malls where shops, food outlets and entertainment facilities abound. Shopping hours vary around the country from 8.30 am to 6.00 pm generally, but corner cafes and grocers have longer hours with certain shops opening 7 days a week for 24 hours. Tourists who are visiting out-of-the-way places are advised to inquire first on the availability of shops and supplies in the areas they intend visiting from travel agents or local tour operators. The arts are alive and well in South Africa and in the main centres a variety of plays, musicals and shows can be seen, including world class operatic and symphonic companies.

Shop till you drop...

by Tsakane

The thing is that for the real African items, SA is not the place. But if you want to buy the reagular stuff you'd buy back home, everything is available. But e.g. in Jo'burg I found cheap clothing sold even on the street corners. I bought atleast three pairs of jeans myself...

Umhulanga Rocks

by Bwana_Brown

While staying at the Westbrook Beach Hotel, we often stopped in the small community of Umhulanga Rocks on our way into Durban. It had this nice mini-mall where we could sit down and have a snack or drink, do some light shopping and get our films developed. While in the Sandton area between Jo'burg and Pretoria, we also went to a large mall with our friends, the Swansens. That mall had everything you could need! We bought some biltong (dried strips of game meat) to chew while we drove around!

YDE, Space Station, Truworths: Girls, if your wanting cheap clothes...

by kismet270

YDE - Young Designers Emporium, full of funky clothes and jewelery. Not too expensive, compared to British prices. Space Station, more rave clothes, also relatively cheap compared to here. Truworths is the best of the big chain stores.

?: Fashion in the City

by DanielleT

The shop is run by various young-designers who sell their creations there. You can get clothes, bags and other accessiors. Of course you have to pay a little more for designer clothes also in South Africa, but compared with the prices in Switzerland these clothes are still cheap.

South African Wines

by Gili_S

South African Wines and wine culture is very developed in South Africa. We had few good wines while there and it is also recommended to buy few selected ones before you go back home :)

Everything is so cheap in South Africa compared with Europe or the USA. So don't pack to much clothing, because you can buy it really cheap!
