Well, I did just hire a driver to bring me from Johannesburg to Sun City. I think I paid just about $200-250 for him to drive me the whole day and it was more convenient for lazy bums like me. Hotels have drivers who are just waiting at the lobby waiting for clients. At Sun City, he parked in this huge parking lot which was unfortunately not too full (maybe it wasn't a busy time? February), and then there is free train ride into the Sun City complex. However, on going back to the parking lot, there was something wrong with the train and we had to wait for a van (about 25 minute wait) to bring us back out to my driver's car (also free - but took a little longer to ask for from the reception desk).

For those who do not wish to walk to the various hotels and activities within the resort a regular bus service will get you to the hotel front entrance and very close to most other activities. The service operates throughout the day and in the evening. I do not know the night cut off hour but we did use it around 10 pm.
The service is free.

Car parking can be difficult in Sun City, there are three major car parks.
1. Sky-train station has a large car park located behind the Cabanas Hotel.
2. Two car-parks are located outside the Sun City Hotel.
3. The Lost City Golf Course has a car park, located next door to the Vacation Club.
4. The Vacation Club has a small outdoor car-park.

The drive to the national park is very easy and takes approx 5 minutes from the Welcome Centre. Pick-up a map of the park from the Welcome Centre before departing for your safari. There is an entrance fee at the gates into the park. Please take note of the closing time of the Park before starting your journey.

All cars can be hired at O. R. Tambo International Airport (formerly known as Johannesburg International Airport. Avis being the biggest rental company.
The journey to Sun city takes approx 2hours and is very easy and well sign posted. We had no problems along the way. The general rule is to keep your windows closed at any major junction or stop signs.
We were generally surprised to find the journey to be so easy without any hiccups.
Getting out of the airport onto the freeway again was easy.

You do not need a car once you have arrived at Sun City. There is a small shuttle bus which operates around the whole resort and stops at each hotel along its circular route. Buses leave daily and regularly from the Welcome Centre. The route also includes the Vacation Club.

To be fair, the roads here are generally very good for a game park.
There was only one place (near the huge lake) where we were rattling along as the road was so bumpy!
There are many roads that are tarred, and many that are dirt. The dirt ones are neturally rougher than the tarred, but they are pretty smooth and in good condition.
There are roads that only the game rangers acn go into, but these are clearly sign-posted.
Signage is very good in the park, and as long as you have a map at hand too, it would be hard to get lost! :)

We usually have our own car when we visit here, or we use a family car, but if you do need to hire a car - as we did our last time here, use Nova Car Rental.
They drop the car off at your home for R135 extra, whcih isnt a lot at all, andwere on time, friendly and just a pleasure to deal with.
When we dropped the car off at the airport, they were yet again professional, helpful and efficitent.
Their prices are very good and they offer a variety of model car.

The ideal way to self-drive in a game park is in a 4x4 land rover. Of course, these are quite expensive to hire, plus they aren’t a necessity, by no means.
They offer you the added height and vantage point when viewing animals, and are an easier ride often when the road is a bit bumpy.
We went in a normal five-door car, and it was absolutely fine. We had no problems whatsoever.
The one thing that my family (naughty naughty!) did was hang out the window, which was okay, but it s not advised. They are looking at the lions that were lying under the tree, who had had a recent kill.
Exciting stuff!
*Remember to have a spare wheel and the usual bits and bobs you might need whilst in the park, plus have enough petrol (gas) too! This is NOT the place to break down or come to a stand still!
** AIR CONDITIONING IS A MUST!!!!
