Sun City Things to Do

  • THE HALL OF TREASURES

Inside of Sun City is a fabled Hall of Treasures. Inside is untold wealth and an endless supply of money. Unfortunately it is the Casino that gets all this money. Statistically you will lose every game on offer. The main Gambling Hall is full of slot machines, video poker and other games designed to make the Casino richer. Las Vegas it’s not....

  • Take tea at The Palace

Over the recent break two friends and I headed off to Sun City for the day. Past experience has taught us that The Palace at the Lost City staff do a pretty good job of keeping non-resident day tripping riff raff from bothering their five star residents. The only way of getting into the hotel to see it from the inside is to book for high tea or for...

  • High Tea At The Palace

This was a very pleasant afternoon in the very plush Palace dining room which is a lavishly furnished and decorated room with towering ceilings and long windows stretching from ceiling to floor. The table settings were appropriate for the room and complimented the High Tea theme.Staff were very attentive and there were several musicians playing...

Both times we had coffee and cake but you can also order beer, wine or spirits from the bar and smething more substantial to satisfy your hunger.Situated on the terrace of the Cascades Hotel there are many tables with beautiful views over the pool and gardens. Well, i have it as an Italian, but in all honesty it's WAY more than that :P Apart from traditional Italian fare, it also serves a wonderful steak, and amazing seafood. Situated within a pool area, the surroundings are beautiful, the ambience is very laid-back and friendly, and the service is top-notch. As could be expected though, the prices are...

  • The only real place to go

This is about the only place within the complex where you can go for a great night out (my opinion). The atmosphere is always festive, there's live music quite often (and the bands are good!), and all the local talent (meaning Sun City staff) end up there at some time. As is to be expected, drinks are not cheap. The club has just been renovated (i...

  • Train ride from parking lot

Well, I did just hire a driver to bring me from Johannesburg to Sun City. I think I paid just about $200-250 for him to drive me the whole day and it was more convenient for lazy bums like me. Hotels have drivers who are just waiting at the lobby waiting for clients. At Sun City, he parked in this huge parking lot which was unfortunately not too...

  • Resort Bus Service

For those who do not wish to walk to the various hotels and activities within the resort a regular bus service will get you to the hotel front entrance and very close to most other activities. The service operates throughout the day and in the evening. I do not know the night cut off hour but we did use it around 10 pm.The service is free.

Car parking can be difficult in Sun City, there are three major car parks.1. Sky-train station has a large car park located behind the Cabanas Hotel.2. Two car-parks are located outside the Sun City Hotel.3. The Lost City Golf Course has a car park, located next door to the Vacation Club.4. The Vacation Club has a small outdoor car-park.

This area is, like most of the country, a haven for African crafts and artistry of all types. From tall skinny giraffes skilfully crafted from jackleberry wood, to intricately woven baskets and hampers, to beautifully beaded jewellery.I love the things they create, especially the wire work and items like cars made from old tin and recycled metal...

Sun City Warnings and Dangers

  • Wild Monkeys May Turn On You or Child

Walking through the resort grounds we often saw monkeys and most times they looked friendly. However when we saw the baboon we were surprised with his size, something you want to keep a distance from. Notices advise you to keep clear, do not approach them as they have a pack mentality. They are like most animals, if you leave them alone they will...

If you see this type of road, please do not think you can take a chance and you wont get caught... there are reasons for them.It may be that it is simply an exit route, used for emergencies only, or is a route to a private camp or something... but it could also be a route that has been temporarily closed due to breeding taking place/new babies...

  • Culling

Culling.A nasty word. But an often necessary one unfortunately.I think the thing about culling that upsets me the most is that one cannot cull just the older members of the family, or perhaps the illest ones... the rangers have to cull entire families in one go!From the youngest to the oldest. Elephants are very family-orientated and they grieve...

Sun City Tourist Traps

  • Sun City Casino

The Casino is full of glitz and promoted glamour. No different to most casinos throughout the world so you should be aware that most people lose their money. Good for a laugh but recommend when you visit the casino just take the amount of money you can afford to lose, any you walk out with is a bonus.

Sun City What to Pack

  • Sunscreen, hat and a jacket.

Don't forget the hat and sunscreen as the African sun can get incredibly fierce during the day. In the early mornings the temperature can drop and become chilly so a lightweight jacket is required.

  • Bring along sunscreen!

This complex is very casual. The South Africans call it "smart casual". Shorts are fine for daytime, but best to dress up a little in the evenings. A simple sundress for the women or collar shirt (hawaiian style) for the men. Bring along a voltage converter. The South African converter is not one that you will find in the typical travel kit. Look...

  • How should one dress in the park?

Luggage with wheels is always a good idea, wherever you are travelling. If you are doing a night hike, bring a backpack and a water bottle. Some ideas: Light coloured clothing that doesnt absorb the sun as much as dark clothing. If you're going on safari, pack comfortable walking shoes and khaki, brown or beige casual clothes. Long-sleeved shirts...
