Simons Town

by mad4travel

Simonstown is a quintessentially English seaside town with intricate Victorian wrought-iron balustrades and the flag-flying British Hotel dominating the main street.Alleyways lead up to whitewashed houses on the hillside, which overlooks a charming waterfront complex and the False Bay Yacht Club alongside extensive Navy buildings. In 1814 the English colonial governors of the Cape turned Simonstown into a Naval Base and it has remained one ever since. This is a nice little place to stop for lunch and wander about. I could not get over how English it felt. You can visit to the Jackass Penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach, a couple of kilometres out of Simonstown. Further along the road towards Cape Point you are very likely to come across the resident troop of baboons who rule the road and jump onto car bonnets to peer nonchalantly in.

Boulder beach penguins

by mad4travel

Now here is a bundle of cuteness!Situated at Simon's Town , Boulders Penguin Colony is part of the Cape Peninsula National Park.Almost 3000 African (jackass) penguins, (so called because their call resembles the bray of a donkey) reign supreme amidst rounded rocks and fish-filled False Bay. These endangered, flightless birds are free to roam the seas and return to their private haven - Foxy Beach at Boulders.Although set in the midst of residential area, it is one of the few sites where this fascinating bird can be observed at close range, wandering freely in a protected natural environment. Newly constructed boardwalks take visitors to within a few metres of the birds. Visitors can observe the penguins closely on the beach and even swim in the sea with them, fun for all ages.In the evening the penguins come back from their fishing expeditions & waddle up the beach to go to their nests...

Oudtshoorn-Ostrich farms

by mad4travel

Surrounded by natural beauty, Oudtshoorn is situated at the foot of the majestic Swartberg Mountain range. Numerous rivers, streams and falls have their origins in the Swartberg, Outeniqua and Kamanassie ranges around the town. Oudtshoorn's main claim to fame though is the 400 ostrich farms surrounding the town, three have distinguished themselves worthy enough to be named show farms. Cango Ostrich Farm is located in the lush Cango Valley, 14 km outside of Oudtshoorn on the main route towards the world famous Cango CavesThe Farm offers comprehensive and complete information regarding the ostrich - and ostrich industry. There you can check out: - the eggs, incubators and chicks - did that- hug and kiss our super friendly female - Linda - did that- feed the ostriches by hand -did that- sit on the ostriches -didn't do that, wouldn't want to kill one!- stand on the eggs (no weight...

by mad4travel

If you are a keen gardener than this is the place for you!The Karoo National Botanical Garden consists of a 10 hectares of cultivated area that draws hundreds of visitors in spring, when brilliantly coloured vygies and daisies are in bloom, and a natural veld reserve with low Karoo-type bushes and succulents covering an area of 144 hectares. The garden sustains interesting collections of Lithops, Conophytum, Drosanthemum, Lampranthus, Stapelia, Crassula, Haworthia and Aloe. About 4 000 species of flowering plant grow here, 350 of them rare and endangered. There is a rich and varied birdlife in the area, and the reserve is used extensively by the local bird dub and the Wildlife Society of South Africa. you can wander around well-maintained trails linking the developed garden with the reserve and get spectacular views of the Breede River Valley. The Garden Route

by mad4travel

The Garden Route is one of the most beautiful and popular travel destinations in South Africa. It starts in the west at Swellendam and ends - officially - at Humansdorp just before Port Elizabeth. The most interesting part stretches from Mossel Bay to the Storms River mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park.Along its stunning coast the Garden Route displays steep rocky cliffs alternating with white sand beaches and dense evergreen montane rainforests. Numerous rivers originate in the bordering mountain range which is part of the Great Escarpment. They meander their way through the green coastal plain and eventually flow into the Indian Ocean.Interesting places to stop are:Oudtshoorn with its Ostrich farms and nearby Cango CavesKnysna - the touristic centre of the Garden Route. The town also got a little waterfront now, with a yacht harbour, restaurants, boutiques etc (altho be warned, they...

Southernmost public toilet in Africa

by mad4travel

Yeah well, its not all serious tips on my pages you know. This is the southernmost public toilet in Africa. It took my fancy to take a photo, I don't know why, I'm sure someone out there might be interested. It was not a spectacular public toilet but it was clean, which is half the battle won.Maybe this could be my mission in life to photograph the most northernmost and southernmost toilets on every continent, but then again, maybe not!

Cape Agulhas

by mad4travel

Cape Agulhas is the southernmost point in the continent of Africa. It is located in a rural area 170 kilometres (105 mi) south-east of Cape Town. The cape was named by Portuguese navigators, who called it Cabo das Agulhas — Portuguese for "Cape of Needles" — in reference to the rocks and reefs that have wrecked many ships in the area. The cape is defined to be the dividing point between the Indian and Atlantic oceans. South of Cape Agulhas the warm Agulhas Current that flows south along the east coast of Africa flows back into the Indian Ocean.Unlike its better-known relative, the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Agulhas is relatively unspectacular, consisting of a gradually curving coastline with a rocky beach. A survey marker indicates the location of the cape, which would otherwise be difficult to identify. The waters near the coast are quite shallow and are renowned as one of the best fishing...

Cape of Good Hope

by mad4travel

The Cape of Good Hope is located at the south-west corner of the Cape Peninsula, about 2.3 kilometres (1.4 mi) west and a little south of Cape Point on the south-east corner. The peninsula forms the western boundary of False Bay. Geologically, the rocks found at the two capes are part of the Table Mountain Group, and are formed of the same type of sandstones as those exposed in the faces of Table Mountain itself. The Cape of Good Hope is often thought of as being the southernmost point in Africa, and the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans; however, this is actually Cape Agulhas, which lies about 150 kilometres (90 mi) east-south-east. The first European to reach the cape was the Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Dias in 1488, who cheerily named it the "Cape of Storms" It was later renamed by John II of Portugal as "Cape of Good Hope" because of the great optimism...

Oudtshoorn-Cango Caves

by mad4travel

Situated close to Oudtshoorn, are caves of fascinating limestone formations in a wide variety of colours.According to legend the caves were discovered during 1780. Early visitors had to brave the pitch darkness of the vast caverns from the poor light of self made candles. Trained guides are at hand to conduct visitors along the magic paths of the world's finest stalactite cave. It's a one kilometer walk, with 416 stairs on a full tour, and lasts about one and a half hours. It can be quite warm and humid. There is also a further tour in the narrowest parts of the cave system but that should not be attempted unless you are an experienced caver. There is also a gift shop and restaurant there.Visiting HoursStandard Tours: 09h00 - 16h00 (depart every hour on the hour)Duration: 60 minutesChildren under 12 years to be accompanied by parents.

Capetown-Robben Island-Mandela's cell

by mad4travel

One of the more interesting aspects of a tour to Robben Island is that your tour guide is likely to be one of the ex prisoners. They will tell you of the hardships of life, like being segregated because of your colour, given insufficient clothing for the weather conditions, being made to do hard labour in the quarries where the rocks are so white they reflect the sun and caused blindness and the fact that most cells did not have windows and were open to the elements. This is Nelson Mandelas cell. There is no bed, just two blankets on the floor. There was a bucket for a toilet that had to be emptied each morning and not much else. He was here for 23 hours a day for 17 years. You have to hand it to him and the other dissidents for holding their nerve, keeping their dream alive and not gunning for retribution when they were released against those that had improsoned them. The ferry to the...
