Safari

by caslu

Naturally, we didn't want to go all the way to Africa and not see any of the magnificent wildlife that still walks the great continent. We signed up for two safari's on reserves bordering Kruger National Park. While both were well worth the trip, Akeru in the Timbavati was superior to Kapama. It's true that Kapama is more upscale but the more rustic Akeru, somehow seemed more authentic. In any case, if you've never done it, a safari is not to be missed.

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

by zindara

Kruger National Park is one of the greater sanctuaries of wild life in the world. The five great ones live there: lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo. You can also find hundreds of other animals: zebras, monkeys, giraffes, crocodiles, antelopes, birds, etc. You need at least 3 days (better 4 or more). It is better to take a tour so you get an experienced ranger that knows how and where are the animals. Sometimes it is difficult to find them, even when the ranger tells you where is the animal!!!During the winter, there is not so wild vegetation, so it is a little bit easier to find animals.

Ronnie's Sex Shop

by geanster

I'd reccomend stopping for a drink at Ronnie's Sex Shop! No, it's not really a "sex" shop. But when he painted ronnie's shop on it, his friends decided to pull a prank and painted sex up there. It stuck. It's in the middle of nowhere. Little Karoo. The walls are covered with markered quotes and drawings and names of people from all over the world, even the refrigerators, ceilings, photos are covered. It's super cool. Of course I couldn't resist the urge to draw so I drew a giraffe and one of my favorite Eddie Izzard (British comedian/actor) references, "An evil herbivore."

OUDSTHOORN. THE FEATHERS FEVER.

by zindara

This small city lived its great splendour when the ostrich feathers began to be desired by the best European Mode Designers. The farms were multiplied, farmers built great fortunes and you could see in the town some of the small palaces of that time that are still conserved. You can today visit the farms, touch the little ostriches, taste ostrich eggs and meat and even ride an ostrich in some farms! There is also a kind of zoo “Crocodile and Cheethaland”, see next tip...

Oudtshoorn

by mvtouring

Oudtshoorn are famous for three things, firstly the Kango caves, followed by its ostriches and the last but now ways least for the KKNK (Klein Karoo Nationale Kunstefees) festival which takes place annually around easter weekend. During the festival, the whole town becomes one big jol and you find festival go-ers running from show to show being it drama or music. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world. Here ostriches are found in great numbers and the region produces the best feathers, leather products and ostrich meat world wide. But the world’s biggest bird is just one of the many attractions in this area of interesting contrasts. This small, safe town is the commercial hub of the greater Klein Karoo region (encompassing Prince Albert, De Rust and Calitzdorp) and is situated in a beautiful valley between the Outeniqua- and Swartberg Mountains. This unique position ( being...

Mokala National Park

by mvtouring

I was indeed very fortunate that my friend invited me to the park. Mokala is SANParks newest park, situated approximately 80km south-southwest of Kimberley, and west of the N12 freeway to Cape Town. Nestled in the hills, Mokala's landscape boasts a variety of koppieveld (hills) and large open plains. I loved the park, because it is open, the camp sites are not fenced in ....... no need for that as there are no preditors in the park. They have two of the big five namely the rhino & buffalo in the park. The isolated dolerite hills give the place a calming feeling of seclusion. A big surprise awaits when you pass through the hills and are confronted by the large open sandy plains towards the north and west of the Park. Mokala is a Setswana name for a Camel Thorn (Kameeldoring). These trees occur in dry woodland and arid, sandy areas and are one of the major tree species of the desert regions...

Ladismith, Cape

by mvtouring

Ladismith is a very interesting little town in the western Kleinkaroo region of South Africa's Western Cape province. Mostly known for its ostrich farming, this little place has lots to offer the traveller on route to Oudtshoorn. The town came into being in 1852 when the farm Elandsvlei was earmarked for the town, and it gained municipal status in 1862. It was named after Lady Juana Smith. It is situated adjacent to a series of fertile, irrigated valleys, at an altitude of 550m, at the southern base of the Swartberg. It is currently included in the southern Kannaland LM. The nearest towns are Calitzdorp to the east, Vanwyksdorp and Riversdale to the south and Laingsburg to the north.
