Kruger National Park

by Gili_S

The Kruger National Park is probably one of the best safari and wild animals parks in the world.I had the plan to visit the Kruger park for long time so when we could get a good barging price to fly to South Africa, we packs our backpacks, camera and some stuff and went on this great adventure.

Do a self drive safari

by Gili_S

I think one great option of adventure while visiting South Africa is to do a self driving safari in one of the many national parks in the country. This is easy to do and most roads roads are excellent, good road signs and maps available and all what you need is good eyes and some patient and you will see all the great animals around you. This will surely give you a great joy.

Sterkfontein Caves

by PierreZA

If you heard of Mrs Pless, this is the place where she was found. Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999, the Sterkfontein Caves are well worth a visit! It is on this site where world-acclaimed fossils have been discovered. There is a museum/exibition area with very nicely displayed fossils, sculls etc.The Sterkfontein Caves is open to the public from 09h00 to 17h00 every day, and the last tour departs at 16h00. You cannot visit the caves without going on an organized tour. The tour is very good and insightful. If you go in summer, do take some water with.Inside the caves, there are areas where you have to crawl through - if you don't like small enclosed spaces, you might have a bit of a problem. If possible, do visit this very interesting site in South Africa! The website gives very good info.Admission:Adults: R110 Children (4-14 years): R65 Children under 4: Free The restaurant at...

Greater St. Lucia Wetlands

by Waxbag

Lake St. Lucia is the largest estuary in Africa and one of the largest in the world. The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Reserve is the third largest park in South Africa stretching from St. Lucia Resort north to Sodwana Bay and then up to the Mozambique boarder. It includes Mkhuze game reserve, Phinda game reserve, False Bay Park as well as Cape Vidal. The lake system is a heritage site contains 5 distinct ecosystems. It is mostly a shallow lake system that is packed with fish that of course brings all the birds. This park is home to about 1000 hippos, 2000 crocodile, as well as a variety of antelope including red duiker, common duiker, wildebeest, reedbuck, bushbuck, and impala. Other animals such as zebra, warthog, mongoose, black rhino, leopard, monitor lizards, vervet monkeys, bush babies, and the rare samango monkey may be spotted. Birds here are fantastic! Particularly interesting are...

How to Choose a South Africa Safari

by Bryony79

So, you’ve made the critical decision and settled on a holiday in South Africa. It’s going to be brilliant. Cape Town is jaw-dropping, the beaches of the Cape Peninsula are beautiful (and more often than not virtually empty), the food is wonderful, the wine even better, and the Garden Route is a road-tripper’s dream. This is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The Big Five will play a big part in every South Africa holiday, but trying to choose a safari really can be a hair-pulling, teeth-grinding affair. The South African safari market is ridiculously saturated (mainly because it is ridiculously lucrative) and there are so many options that it can be difficult to know where to begin. The good news is that there all kinds of safaris out there – something for every budget and every kind of person (except perhaps those who don’t like animals). Whether you’re a backpacker or an...

Splendour and magnificence - game spotting.

by afrette

Big game spotting is, of course, one of Africa's main attractions and, in my experience, never fails to enthrall. I paticularly loved the game parks of KwaZulu-Natal as, at that time, the animals were not overly familiar with humans or their vehicles and were therefore still pretty wild. Consequently, they were not as easy to spot as in some of the better known parks in Africa, but you could be sure that, when you did strike lucky, you were seeing "the real thing"! This was especially inspiring for me as it helped my art enormously.Of course, you can view most of these animals easily in many of the well appointed modern zoos throughout the world, always an edifying experience. However, nothing can compare with seeing the mighty beasts of Africa in their natural setting. We tended to visit three main parks - Hluhluwe, Umfolozi and Makuzi. We would stay in comfortable villas or rondavels,...

Drakensberg

by PierreZA

The Drakensberg range stretch for about 1000km from the Eastern Cape to the Northern Province. The biggest part of this mountain range is in Kwazulu-Natal. A large part of the range is part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a World Heritage site. The highest peaks are between 3000-3400 m above sea level. There are many different areas worth visiting. I have been to the Central Berg three times now, and once to the Mont-Aux-Sources part. The Central Berg area is very accessible, beautiful with a lot to see and do. It is an about 4h30 min drive from Pretoria. It is a spectacular part of the mountains with some of the highest peaks (Cathkin, Champaign Castle and Cathedral) in this area.See my Drakensberg page for more detailed info

Pretoria

by PierreZA

Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa. It might not be the most popular tourist city, but is does warrant a visit for a couple of days. It is home to the Union Buildings, Voortrekkermonument, Church Square, the National Zoo and National Art Gallery. The newly completed Freedom Park Monument, which is most definitely a highlight in Pretoria. For more info about Pretoria, do visit my Pretoria page on VT.

Johannesburg: To do

by PierreZA

Johannesburg does have tourist attractions well worth a visit. I do believe that the Apartheid Museum, in the South of Johannesburg, is a must visit. I don’t think you will get to see a more authentic and graphic recollection of this terrible era which we are now free from. Do visit!Walking distance from the Apartheid Museum is a huge theme park, called Gold Reef City. This Park is more than just an amusement park with rides etc. You will be able to go down a mine shaft o experience what it is like for miners working underground. There is also a theatre, shops and restaurants. It makes for a lovely day out. It can get very busy during school holidays and peak season (December).Visit Rosebank on a Sunday. Besides the very interesting and lively Rooftop Market, there are plenty shops and restaurants to choose from. Rosebank is also where you will find the African Craft Market, where you...

Johannesburg

by PierreZA

Johannesburg (Joburg, Jozi, Egoli) could be called the business capital of South Africa and is therefore also the richest city. The city developed after gold was discovered. It is also the biggest city in the country. Johannesburg is a city which move at a fast pace. Despite not being a major tourist attraction, it still has some very interesting things to do and see to offer.Oliver Thambo International Airport is most probably the port of entry for most tourists visiting SA. The airport is East of Johannesburg, and by 2010, we will have a rail system connecting the airport to the city of Johannesburg.Johannesburg, especially Sandton, is the place where you will find most International Hotels like the Hilton etc. Sandton is a business hub of Johannesburg, with Shopping Malls for the more affluent.Pretoria, the Capital, is only about 50km north of Johannesburg.
