Pilgrim's Rest - not much to see, bit dull, bit of a waste, a few gold workings and a load of tourist shops in the old houses, I'd give it a miss.
Kruger Park. Really out of the way to get to and feels like an amusement park. Umfolozi Park in Northern KwaZulu Natal is less well known but much less touristy.
Just be alert, lock vehicles when you park, don't pick up stangers.
