Petrol and diesel prices are fixed in South Africa

by CatherineReichardt

It may seem odd to visitors, but there is no competition allowed between oil companies in terms of their pricing in South Africa, so there is no value trying to shop around to get a good deal. The petrol (that's 'gas' for you North Americans) and diesel prices are set by the Department of Energy and no company is allowed to charge below that fixed level. Note that the fuel is slightly more expensive in the inland region as compared to the coast (to reflect the transport component from the coastal refineries), but the rate per litre (yes, we're metric) is still low compared to Europe.

driving

by smirnofforiginal

Get a car and get around. It is the only way to see this large country.... and it is so easy - a 2WD is sufficient. The roads are tarmac and in good condition, petrol stations abound, some spectacular scenery to drive through, interesting villages to find and just as interesting people to meet. There are many scares about road blocks and safety etc... these scares are very real BUT I never encountered anything untowards. Be aware and and be sensible and enjoy...Hire cars may be taken (with permission of the hire company and a letter of their consent) from South Africe into Namibia, Botswana and, if you are very lucky and with special permission into Zimbabwe, or at least as far as Victoria Falls. I was only allowed to take my car to the falls and it was on a strinct daytrip/no overnight policy. These countries share a vehicle insurance which is why it is possible. You will, of course,...

Passport requirements

by dmcourtspahr

If it is just a week I would pick Cape Town. Kruger Park is wonderful but the two locations are very far apart. I just spent 4 weeks in SA and just took the normal travel precautions that others have suggested here and was fine. Trust your 6th sense; if you feel uncomfortable about a person or place leave/avoid the problem. My major safety concern was the driving conditions - lots of speeding and cars/taxis pushing/shoving their way into my lane. Took some getting used to. Enjoy the trip, its a majic country. Just to clarify the number of pages required in your passport. On my recent trip to SA (Nov 27th - Dec 25th) we were held to "must have a minimum of 4 blank pages" by the airlines attendant at check-in. I was flying from the Atlanta airport to JNB on Delta Airlines. I watched a passenger be turned away at the boarding gate by the check-in attendant due to the required 4 pages were...

Air Travel: South African Airways

by PierreZA

SAA is our National Carrier. It seems to get mixed reviews, but I do believe that the Premier Class on SAA is one of the best in-flight experiences I ever had. Unfortunately the same cannot always be said about the economy section, alyhough they have improved rcently. In general I mostly had pleasant experiences with SAA. They serve most African countries, and also the only flights from South Africa to South America (Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires), other than Air Malaysia, which fly to Buenos Aires via Cape Town. There are daily flights to London Heathrow, Munich, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Perth etcThey also have frequent flight to Mauritius, Zanzibar, Madagascar, Victoria Falls, Windhoek and many African destinations. They have many daily domestic flights between JNB, CPT, PE, Durban, Bloemfontein, George etc

Public Transport

by PierreZA

Public transport is a problem in SA. We do not have the infrastructure which you will find in Europe. We are looking forward to the completion of a project called the Gautrain, which is an urban rail system serving Johannesburg (including the airport) and Pretoria. The first phase should be in use during 2010.Bus services are different for different cities. Plans are made to improve public bus services.Be careful to use minibus taxis, as they could be unsafe.

Driving in South Africa

by PierreZA

We drive on the left side of the road (as in UK, India, and Australia).Manuel transmission gears are much more common than automatic.Urban speed limit = 60km/h and in some areas 80km/hOn National highways, speed limit is 120km/hDistances are indicated in kilometres and not milesWhen driving in cities, do look out for minibus taxis, as they often disobey the rules of the road. Petrol (gas) stations (Caltex, ENGEN, BP, Shell) are easy to find and in abundance. You do not fill up yourself, but an attendant will do that for you, and is usually tipped (R2 – R5), as they usually clean your windscreens as well. You can now pay for petrol with your credit card in SA. You always have to have your drivers licence with you when driving, if not, be sure to be fined. Driving and talking on your cell phone in hand is illegal, so do use a hands free set (although you see people talking on cell phones...

Air travel: International

Johannesburg is the transport hub of SA. The newly renovated Oliver Thambo International Airport (Johannesburg) is the busiest airport in the country. Carriers to Johannesburg include: Air France (Paris); BA (London); Virgin Atlantic (London); Lufthansa (Frankfurt); KLM (Amsterdam); Iberia (Madrid/Barcelona); Emirates (Dubai); Cathay Pacific (HK); Singapore Airlines (Singapore); Gulf Air (Bahrain); Qatar Airways (Doha); Swiss Air (Zurich); Egypt Air (Cairo); Etihad (Abu Dhabi); TAP (Lisbon); Turkish (Istanbul); etc. There are also a few African carriers, like Air Angola, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian; Seychelles, Mauritius etc Cape Town and Durban is the only other International Airports in South Africa. Carriers flying directly to Cape Town: BA (London); KLM (Amsterdam); Emirates (Dubai); Qatar (Doha); Lufthansa (Frankfurt)Check the ACSA website for more info

Driving The Garden Route

by canuck68

As Gerald said, you won't find any elephants on the road on the Garden Route. I think the advantage of self driving once you get used to which side of the road to drive on is that you can stop whenever you want to....to look at something, have a cup of coffee, go for a walk on the beach, etc.The roads are very good...I think better than many I have seen in Canada.

Mango - low cost airline

by MarioPortugal

MangoMango, like Kulula Air, is a low cost airline very convenient to fly around in South Africa. Flight tickets are priced very reasonable. For excellent deals, better buy tickets with many days in advance. I've used Mango, for several one-way trips, such as Johannesburg-CapeTown and return and was very happy the service. I love Mango.- MF in South Africa, May 2009.
