Bus

by didgeridorien

South Africa has a couple of national bus lines: Greyhound, Intercape, Translux and SA Roadlink, which stop in the major towns and are failry cheap. These busses are used by the locals moslty. You can buy tickets online and at bus stations. There is also the BazBus, this bus line is often used by backpackers. It has a 'hop on, hop off' ticket and drops you off at a backpackers hostel in each town. It is more expensive than the other bus lines, but will allow you to get to know a lot of international people. You can get tickets online and at backpackers hostels.

Petrol prices in South Africa

by do9an

If you are planning to rent a car in South Africa, petrol prices are about half of that in Europe. In April 2009, a litre of unleaded was about 95 euro cents in France, whereas in SA it was around 6,5 rants (which is about 50 euro cents)

Rail travel

by Jenniflower

There are several inter-city passenger trains in South Africa, ranging from incredible luxury to very basic. Not as bad as some of the bad ones you find in other parts of Africa and Asia, but bad enough. The Blue Train won the award as ‘the world’s leading luxury train’ at the World Travel Awards held in the Bahamas in 1998 and 1999. It comprises of two trains and four separate routes, and has become an important part of tourism packages to South Africa. We have never been on it - far too expensive for us, even with British Pounds - but hope to go one day.Having travelled throughout the UK and Europe on trains, I must warn travellers to South Africa that the rail system is no-where as punctual or as frequent and well maintained. In South Africa public transport is not given the same priority and funding that it gets elsewhere. Rather travel by car or fly.

South African Airways

by georeiser

When it comes to the South African Airways fleet, customers can be assured of comfort, reliability, modern interiors, technologically advanced, trend-setting features and most of all, high safety standards applied in maintaining aircraft. SAA vision is to deliver sustainable profits and to grow our market share through world-class service to our customers internally and externally. The company is a member of Star Alliance, and has 21 Airbus A-340, 11 Airbus A-319 and 17 Boeing 737-800. (From the website). I had the pleasure to fly SAA from Johannesburg to Dar es Salaam. It took 3,5 hours and was a nice flight. The service was good.

Airlines to South Africa

by canuck68

I have flown to South Africa twice and been on SAA and BA and Air Canada in the process. I found BA to have the least amount of leg room. AS far as the cheapest fares go, I would google that and do lots of homework and then go to a travel agent as they seem to come up with the best fares as they buy in bulk. By googling first, you know what is a fair price.1Time airline in South Africa seem to offer the cheapest airfare right now but there are three or four (at least) domestic airlines in South Africa. The rest can be best answered by South Africans. Actually they can probably answer all of it better than I can.

Local network in SA

by Brad87

4)The local transportation could be great if you plan everything before. But it is so so so slow, very slow...Within the city, in Cape Town for instance, it is really easy to get a taxi or a minibus, they are everywhere and not that expensive...The train can drive you to all the suburbs..The main problem is the insecurity after 7pm. It can be dangerous. Even taxis can be dangerous at night. But taking the train is a trip, an experience..not just a way to go from a place to an other...But you really enjoy it !

Driving in South Africa

by MichaelFalk1969

A concept you have to get used to: In SA you facilitate overtaking by temporarily evading across the yellow line which marks the sideline of the motorway. (Depending on a free sideline, which you should check!) If you are going to overtake and somebody lets you by crossing the yellow line, you flash your warning lights once to say "thank you".I read some postings about how bad South Africans drive .. I cannot confirm this information. On the contrary. The drivers I met on the road were very disciplined, kept their safety distance, kept their speed limits and didn`t even use a horn. People walking on the road, jaywalkers, cattle and wild animals on the road are a risk, especially in rural areas. As you can see in the photo.South Africa keeps the motorways spotlessly clean .. we rarely saw any trash on the road, like a can of coke or plastic bags. They employ people to clean the road on a...

travelling about

by poohbrnz

My advice if you are to spend like myself over a month in South Africa buy yourself a car and drive.this way you go where u wish and can go into the back blocks so to speak and meet with all the different people.Fuel is not too expensive and insurance i took with OUT INSURANCE and for me it was very reasonable. You are allowed to register your car in your name all you need is a Vehicle ID which can be obtaimed by presenting at the car registration centre with 2 passport photos and request a vehicle ID it can be done while you wait. They give it to you and it can be very helpful if u are ever asked for ID and you dont have to carry your passport all the time if you dont wish to.

People on the roads

by John195123

Be aware of people on the roads... they'll usually be on the sides, but when you have two lanes being used by three cars wide, not to mention the donkey cart you're passing... just be careful! Often the slower carts will use a sideroad if available.
