South African Airlines

by Jenniflower

I have flown with them many times. I have had mostly good experiences but national flights in South Africa were nothing special. I actually prefer kulula.com, which is a no frills service and the staff are always friendly and polite.I do think their international flights are great though, albeit a tad more expensive that BA and Virgin (direct flights) often. They have a frequent flyer programme which is really helpful and has numerous benefits in their ‘Voyager Miles’. They fly direct from Heathrow to South Africa, and this is a must for a long haul flight. We have flown with Emirates via Dubai before, and whereas Emirates were superb as an airline, we cannot fault them at all, the route via Dubai is VERY long and what could be a 10/11 hour journey, becomes an 18 hour one. We won't do this again! Rather pay the extra £ and go direct I think.

Be Polite When Passing

by TRimer

One of the things we figured out when driving around South Africa is that there is a little system of thanking other drivers when you pass and are passed on a highway. A good many kilometers of the N2 for example is only one lane in one direction with a pretty large shoulder. Slower drivers tend to hug the shoulder to let others pass (there are places where the road becomes 2 lanes). When you pass the driver, you pull into the oncoming lane - yes, a little scary the first 100 times we did it. When a driver passes, they flip on their flashers to thank the passed car. The passed car then flips on his lights as a "you're welcome".

Travel by road

by Jenniflower

The national road system links all major centres in South Africa. The network covers 7,000 km, while toll-roads, which are serviced by 21 toll-plazas, cover about 1,000 km. Toll roads are an absolute pain in the neck! An expensive pain too! But much needed for the local municipalities (councils). They bring in much needed revenue.Every year about 10,000 people are killed and 150,000 injured in approximately 500,000 accidents on the road. Much of this is due to drunk driving :(

South Africa's airports

by Jenniflower

South Africa has nine main airports (there are smaller ones like Lanseria, Nelspruit and Skukuza all over the country), which include the 3 major international airports: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The other six are domestic airports: Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth, Upington, East London, George.

Cape Town International Airport

by Jenniflower

Cape Town International Airport is South Africa's second largest airport after Johannesburg International Airport, and a prime tourism gateway! The Cape is one of the country's major tourist destinations. The airport is often the visitor's first encounter with South Africa, and a good example she is too! :)

Durban International Airport

by Jenniflower

Durban International Airport is found 16 kilometres from the city of Durban, 'the city where the fun never sets!' Durban is known as 'the playground of Africa'. The airport handles about 2.4 million passengers every year. During the holiday season, local and foreign tourists flock to the well known beaches of Durban, as well as to KwaZulu-Natal, with it's wonderful game parks, mountains and lush landscape.

Johannesburg International Airport

by Jenniflower

This is South Africa's main international airport with the most traffic at any given time.Located 24 kilometres north east of the city, Johannesburg International Airport (JIB/JNB) is the air transport and tourism gateway of Southern Africa, with 53 airlines carrying over 11 million passengers annually. The airport has 6 terminals serving both domestic and international air traffic, with excellent parking (long and short term) facilities. After Dubai airport, this is my favourite airport... modern, bright and efficient. It's an excellent exxample of architecture and a country that is on the up! :)Update October 2006: This airport is now called Oliver Thambo International, as part of South Africa's promotion of the New South Africa, in remembering how Oliver Thambo helped bring freedom to the oppressed majority in the landl

Geographical info

by Jenniflower

Be aware of the geographic layout of the land and distances and terrain before you embark on your travels! Here's a brief run down.South Africa is five times larger than Britain. Like much of the African continent, South Africa’s landscape is dominated by a high plateau in the interior, and is surrounded by a narrow strip of coastal areas that lie low. The coastline is organically regular (if that makes sense) and has a few natural and man-made harbours. South Africa is divided into nine provinces; Gauteng, Northern Province, Mpumlalanga, NorthWest, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Northern Cape.
