Roadworks on National Roads

by nora_south_africa

If you travel in South Africa and would like info on roads that are being worked on , this way you can plan your route. I include the web site of the SA National Roads agency. The web site says which roads are closed, even .. It has info on toll tarifs, Road conditions and safety.

Construction Free Sundays

by TRimer

When driving in the Western Cape we spent some quality time at construction stops. This is where the road goes down to one lane for both directions and one had to wait for a flagger to let you through. Not a huge hassle but is can add on to travel times. The biggest inconvenience of construction is that one can not pass slower vehicles (i.e. buses, farm equipment, etc) at these points. One of the great things we discovered is that no construction occurs on Sundays. That means that if you have a long distance to travel (i.e. from Knysna to Franschhoek) then Sunday is optimal for driving.

Pigs and Firearms

by TRimer

When you are driving from the Eastern to Western Cape by car, be prepared to stop at a police checkpoint (the stop is at Storms River). The police stop, which has been there for months according to some locals, is to check for livestock and livestock products. Still, it was quite a shock when we were asked "do you have any pigs in the car?" then "any firearms?" We assured them that we only had luggage in the trunk and they sent us on our way.

Be prepared to wait

by TRimer

When you arrive at the Cape Town International Airport be prepared for a rather long wait going through Passport Control. One of the kinks that needs to be worked out before the World Cup visits SA is staffing of the lines. We arrived at 6am and were the only flight, yet it took us 1 1/2 hours to get through Passport Control. The problem is that they only had 3 of the stations open (there were 15 I believe). And this is supposedly the norm according to many people we asked (policeman on duty, driver who picked us up, locals we met later during the trip).

Airport distance from city!

by nora_south_africa

Johannesburg International airport is 24km (15 miles) northeast of the city and takes about 35 minutes by car. Cape Town International airport is 22km (14 miles) east of the city, about 25 minutes. Durban International is 16km (10 miles) south of the city, about 20 minutes. All have bureau de changes.

Driving in National Parks

by MichaelFalk1969

A normal car will usually suffice for south african national parks; you probably won`t need a 4WD. It is not always easy to spot animals in the parks from the car as the vegetation is high and even an elephant can vanish completely from sight a few meters distance from the road. So be patient and drive slowly.Keep in mind that even bug beetles have right of way! They are so big you can easily spot them from a car.By the way I didn`t arrange the turtles on the photo to have a better shot. They just came along naturally. No animals were harmed while shooting this photo.

avoid Imperial Car Rental / Kulula Cars

by kuulluuk

Avoid Imperial Car Rental / Kulula Cars. I rented a car in Jo'burg trought Kulula. Got a Imperial Car rent car. It was quite a old car and not in so good condition. But that's nothing. Police stopped me in normal traffic control ( they were stopping all cars ). I thought it's just a routine. But I got in troubles. Police said, that my car doesn't have a valid insurance. I called to Imperial and police also spoke with officer. But it doesn't help. I need to pay a really big fine. When I returned car, I made a reclamation. They promise to contact immediately. They didn't.When I got my visa bill, I saw that they are trying to charge more than double price ( for two days, even I used just one. plus some extras). I tried to contact, but they didn't answered. Then I contacted Kulula.com and they contacted Imperial. And after numerous messages I got a Letter of Apology. They admit, that the car...
