Update on R200 notes (and how to avoid them)

by CatherineReichardt

Further to my earlier warning about fake R200 notes in circulation, the Reserve Bank has issued new R200 notes. However, these are very similar in design to the old notes, and I'm not going to bother running through the subtle changes that have been made as it is unlikely that a tourist would be able to pick up the differences.Banks claim that because the new notes have been issued and their systems have been used to eliminate fakes from their system ("trust us, we're a bank ..."), customers have no right to refuse being issued with legal tender. Thus, my previous suggestion that you refuse to accept R200 notes because you are afraid of being issued with fakes will probably not work. I would therefore suggest that a better way to avoid being given R200 notes would be to ask that you be issued with smaller denomination notes (R100 for example) because they are more convenient to use -...

Bringing home some of the spirit(s) of Africa

by CatherineReichardt

South Africa has a vibrant wine industry, and local wine and spirits are very affordable by international standards. So, if you've acquired a taste for the local tipple during your visit, and want to bring some of the spirit(s) of Africa home with you, then here are a few suggestions that will hopefully be of use.Easily the cheapest place to buy wine is at the cellar door. Those lucky enough to be visiting the Cape winelands can do extensive, self sacrificing market research to inform their decision, and, if you wish to buy in bulk, it is possible to arrange with the vineyard for shipment. Just be aware that there may be duty payable in your home country which could potentially exceed the shipping charges + the purchase price, so do your homework if you think that this is an option you may be interested in.The next cheapest option are bottle stores and supermarkets, and...

Cape Town quick safety

by Capetownfundi

Don't let the media cloud your judgement! Every country has its problems and South Africa is no different. All Countries have "dodgy" areas which should be avoided. In Cape Town, The Cape Flats, Townships are general no go areas..Unless you are on a guided tour. Practise general safety : i.e Don't walk around in unfamiliar areas at night, don't leave doors unlocked, do not leave handbags and valuables on the car dash or front seat, Don't advertise the fact that you are a tourist by wearing cameras etc draped around your neck. SOuth Africa is a really beautiful and wonderful country to visit. I hope you enjoy every minute of it!

Do not accept R200 notes

by CatherineReichardt

At the time of writing (May 2010), there has been a big problem with forged R200 notes entering circulation recently, to the point where many shops and banks refuse pointblank to accept them. These are orange/red notes with a leopard on them - and as it's difficult for even locals to spot the fakes, a tourist is simply not going to be able to identify a counterfeit.I would therefore caution you to make sure that you don't accept any R200 notes. If you are given them by a bank or bureau de change or in your change, state politely (but firmly) that you have been informed that there has been a problem with fake notes of this denomination and are therefore sure that the other person will appreciate why you would prefer to have R100 or R50 instead.Better to risk offending someone than to be landed with a lot of money that nobody else will accept!

Crime

by Gili_S

The crime rates in South Africa is one of the worst in the world as well as a high HIV rates. This country is considered also very danger for tourists. However, this does not means tourists in general or anyone in particular cannot visit the country or is in constant danger. We did not encounter any problems or difficulties, but we came to see the nature, wild life, parks and mountains and avoided the big cities and problematics areas and enjoyed our trip very much.

Animals on the roads

by Gili_S

In Europe we sometimes see road signs of Elk or Deer on the roads that we should be aware of, how often you really see any? Well, here there will be signs of wild animals and be sure that you will see wild animals and that they are danger, especially if they are 10 times the size of an Elk.When driving in the parks wild animals are everywhere and driving speed is very limited, be patient and drive carefully.Outside the parks on national roads and rural areas be aware that wild animals as well as farm animals are common on the roads not to mentioned that also local people and often kids are on the roads as there is no alternative for them.So be very careful while driving in South Africa.*However, also be careful of possible car jacking and do not stop to strangers.

Theft.....Avoiding

by canuck68

As in most larger centers, there is always the danger of being robbed especially if you look like a tourist. For me, the easiest way to go shopping or touring was to wear cargo pants.By wearing them, I could put my credit card and money right in the front pockets of the pants so would know should anyone attempt to steal them. This way, money or card is easily accessible and no purse is needed.I also traveled to South Africa wearing cargo pants and checked my purse. I am paranoid about credit card and this way I could easily keep track of them. I had just enough money to buy snacks at Heathrow or Frankfurt and a bit to get me started in South Africa.

General Driving Safety Tips in SA

by satpacker

We know crime is a major concern of many visitors to South Africa, so here are a few tips we tell our all clients:1. Always plan where you are going carefully so you don't end up in the wong place at the wrong time. 2. Show confidence - don't hesitate or ignore people around your car - let them know you've seen them. 3. Don't leave valuables in sight when in towns or cities. 4. Should anything bad happen, keep calm, smile (if you can), give them what they want. Most importantly, act smoothly and predictably. 5. Be especially careful at badly-lit junctions at night. Don't pull up too close to the car in front and keep rolling forward slowly if you can. Where possible, avoid driving at night.

The Wrath of White Supremacists!

by afrette

Danger can appear without warning in South Africa and you can find yourself embroiled in a dodgy situation before you have realised it! Take for instance one quiet Sunday afternoon in Crestholme, I and my family basking in that still contentment following the morning worship of God followed by a good lunch! The air was suddenly rent with alarming screams of terror. I rushed outside and saw a frightening scene in the street. A large Mercedes was parked diagonally across the way, and a middle-aged white man was trying to force - by the scruff of her neck clothing - a young black girl of about sixteen years into the boot (trunk) of the car. Simultaneously, another, younger white man, was encouraging a pit-bull type dog to attack a black lady who was carrying her shopping and who had a baby strapped to her back. The two black ladies were clearly very poor and the older one had a large bag of...

Beware hijacking

by JohanIsWeg

Be wary of being hijacked when stationary at a traffic light, stop sign, or four-way-stop intersection. Do not leave ANYTHING where it is visible from the outside of the vehicle. Maintain a safe distance behind the car in front of you, in the event you have to make an emergency getaway. You can't do this if you're sitting on the other car's bumper!UPDATE 14 July 2009: A grandmother, mother and two infant twins were lucky to escape with their lives today while traveling on the road between Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark. They were stationary at an intersection when a hijacker armed with an automatic assault rifle walked up to them and shot out one of the car's tyres. The mother had the presence of mind to drive away, but the hijacker got into another vehicle and pursued the fleeing victims for 2.5km! The gunman leant out of the window and continually fired at the escaping car, bullets...
