Road use in South Africa

by JohanIsWeg

The tragic death recently (June 2009) of two Dutch tourists near Lydenburg, South Africa, reinforces the three factors prospective road users in South Africa have to be cognisant of: crime, culture and conditions.Incidents of crime against road users in South Africa are high, including murder, hijacking and other property-related offences. A SA police officer advised me strongly to employ the following crime prevention strategies when driving in South Africa:• When inside your vehicle, lock all doors and leave windows open only slightly, if required.• Never leave valuables visible within your vehicle, irrespective of whether the car is occupied.• Be particularly aware when stopping at an intersection, traffic light or stop sign – this is a prime opportunity for criminals to strike. Always maintain a safe distance from the car in front to allow for evasive action if required (for example,...

General Comments on Driving in South Africa

by satpacker

Driving in South Africa is very easy and should be a highlight of your trip, however:1. Some roads may look major routes on a map but can quickly deteriorate into a dirt track. This is not necessarily a problem, even in a saloon car. 2. In rural areas you have to be careful of potholes as well as livestock and people on the road. In cities you need to be careful of the kamikaze mini-bus drivers who have limited regard for the normal rules of the road or lane discipline! 3. It is polite to pull over to the left 'hard shoulder' lane where possible to allow faster traffic to over-take. Typically they will flash their hazard lights to thank you. You can thank them for thanking you by flashing your headlights briefly! 4. 'Fourway Stops' are common in South Africa. All approaching traffic must slow to a stop and only pull off when it is their turn (determined by the order the traffic arrived)....

Tips for Driving Safely in South Africa

by satpacker

Your personal security should not be a problem if you use common sense and follow local advice.1. Always plan where you are going carefully so you don't end up in the wong place at the wrong time. 2. Show confidence - don't hesitate or ignore people around your car - let them know you've seen them. 3. Don't leave valuables in sight when in towns or cities. 4. Should anything bad happen, keep calm, smile (if you can), give them what they want and, most importantly, act smoothly and predictably. 5. Be especially careful at badly-lit junctions at night. Don't pull up too close to the car in front and keep rolling forward slowly if you can.

ATM - Beware of anyone trying to "help"!

by tini58de

When using an ATM machine in South Africa, please do make sure that nobody is watching or distracting you! In many instances people might offer "help" and before you know it, your card has disappeared. There are various ways of this sort of scam - please do read the website stated below. In Simon's Town this happened to us, when we used the ATM for the third time (and the first two times we had no problems whatsoever). We were done withdrawing the money and were about to leave, when the next customer told us that we had to re-insert our card to finalize the transaction. He said that he could not get any money unless we had done so. We were insecure about this, but luckily our tour guide Frank showed up and saved us, before we could do as we were told. This had happened to him a few years before - he re-inserted the card and the card was swallowed!!! He went through quite a bit of hassle...

No ATM at Johannesburg International Airport

by do9an

Beware that there is no ATM in the OR Tambo airport after the customs. If you need to withdraw cash you will either wait a long queue at the exchange office, or you will need to enter South Africa again, withdraw your cash there, and then pass the customs one more time (and this takes time given the relaxed attitude of customs officers taking their time).

Murder and mayhem!

by afrette

South Africa is indeed a wonderful country, but it can also be extremely dangerous. I understand that this is even more the case now than it was when I was living there and for sure, it was bad enough then! So when you visit, pay great heed to the warnings that will certainly be given to you by your travel guides. Do NOT attempt to do any exploring of either town or countryside without first seeking - and heeding - sound advice.I tell at the beginning of my South African page how we spent the first 3 months in a place called Hillbrow in Johannesburg. We stayed in a cheery, sunny flat and the vast choices in shopping, entertainment, etc. indeed seemed marvellous after the beautiful but rather restricted Malawi. We had alot if fun.Alas, Hillbrow is now a very different place. I doubt there could be anywhere on earth that is not an actual a war zone, that is much more dangerous. My TIP is...

Two Passport Blank Pages...Airport Corruption

by jumpingnorman

My passport was almost full but before I left America, I had one remaining page that was blank "back-to-back" but the last page had the word "Amendments" on it which is normally written on every US passport. I knew South Africa needed 2 blank pages for the visa, and US airport said mine looked "okay". After a long 24 hour journey, immigration officials gave me a hard time at the Cape Town airport. They said they are getting my bags and sending me back to USA on the next British Airways flight! I asked who I can talk with and he said, "The President of South Africa"! I did not argue anymore, and awaited my fate (thinking I'll just get new passport pages in London and probably spend about $3,000 to 6,000? more going back and forth??? airline tickets, etcetera --- was it worth it?)...But after 45 minutes, a lady official looked at my passport and persuaded the other guy to let me...

My husband's luggage was unpacked and his aftershave stolen as well as his IPod, taperecorder. A curio and somebody's shorts were left in his suitcase. It seems as if people unpacked his suitcase as well as others, and got their contents mixed up. So lock your suitcase.

DO NOT FEED THE MONKEYS

by DAO

The great thing about South Africa is that you can drive just outside of a town or village in many areas and see wild Monkeys. Please do not fee them inside the grounds of nice hotels or inside towns. This just attracts them and they then leave their natural areas. They also eat foods that are really not good for them and they can cause the locals a lot of issues after you have left. Some people will happily kill the sweet Monkeys you have attracted into their living areas. So please keep wildlife live in the wild. Do not feed the Monkeys.

SEXUALY TRANSMITTED DISEASE

by DAO

You will love the people of South Africa. Some of you may want to take this a step farther and progress past that handshake and make arrangements for a very intimate visit with a local person. You may even want to give them your own personal duty-free gift. If so, please WRAP IT UP! The national average for HIV infection is 30%! A good condom can protect you from some real nasties like:* Chlamydia* Genital Herpes * Gonorrhoea * HIV/AIDS * Human Papillomavirus (HPV) * Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) * SyphilisI have never even heard of some of them, but I know you would not like to take theme home and have to explain it later. The South African Government distributes over 200 million FREE condoms a year! And that¡¦s just the men. Ladies are issued with at least 100 million. It is also to pick them up at Spaza shops (tuck shops), Shebeens (local bars) and from traditional healers. Want to...
