Be aware and responsible at all times

by Jenniflower

Get a local's perspective - ask someone where you're staying to give you a run-down on any potentially unsafe areas. As with anywhere in the world, when you're in a city err on the side of caution. Don't openly carry valuables, avoid deserted areas, avoid areas not lit, do not hitch hike, and just be aware of what's going on around you at all times. Keep alert.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

by Jenniflower

Please note that with immediate effect, anyone travelling to South Africa must have two consecutive blank pages in their passport which lie side by side when the passport is open (i.e. a left and a right hand page). Passports must also be valid for at least six months.Passengers travelling to South Africa with passports which do not comply with these requirements, will either be stopped from boarding the aircraft or risk deportation on arrival in South Africa. In addition, a parent travelling with children, WITHOUT the other parent, will need a letter of consent from the absent parent. The letter of consent must be certified by the police. At present, passengers not holding this will be able to board the aircraft, but may be questioned by immigration on arrival. However, this situation may change.*Please note: A family member emailed this to me. Please double check with the South African...

Cape Town Storm - August 2003

by ant1606

On Aug. 19, 2003, an extratropical cyclone had hit Cape Town and we were lucky as we left the area days before. This was an oustanding event for the region and such occurrences seem to be pretty rare. This picture was sent to us by a local friend and shows the oceanfront parking area. Just days before it was a lovely place to stroll in the sun."A powerful storm system in the South Atlantic Ocean swept a cold front into South Africa during August 18-20. Heavy rains, mountain snows and strong winds affected southwestern Cape Province with winds of 90 km/hr with gusts to 130 km/hr (55 mph with gusts to 80 mph). This caused considerable wind damage to parts of the greater Cape Town area"Source: South African Weather Service

Crime rate getting higher day by day

by ingemushi

No matter how careful you are this is not enough. We who live in the country know more than the tourists on what to avoid yet many of us have experienced crime first hand and have had family members, friends murdered or for those who have been lucky not to have had anything happen to their loved ones, knows of someone who has been murdered. We South AFricans are fed up with living in fear and with an incompetent government whose Safety and SEcurity Minister has made a statement that whoever is complaining about crime should leave the country. This website http://www.crimexposouthafrica.org/ was launched recently as people have had enough and want the world to really know what is going on in South AFrica. Our government tells the overseas community that crime is under control and many if not most violent crimes and murders do not even make the newspaper.Have a look at the site above and you...

Snakes on the road!

by MichaelFalk1969

Because the road surface conserves heat rather good, even when temperatures chill down at dusk, snakes are often found there. So if you happen to drive at that time of day, try to avoid driving over a snake with your car (if possible without causing an accident). On the other hand, do not try to pick them up and move them away or check if they are still alive (this advice should be self-explaining). South Africa has some pretty nasty venonomous snakes. Anyway, in South Africa it is not a good idea to drive at dusk or during the night, as the risk to collide with cattle or jaywalking humans is pretty high.

Respect animal privacy ...

by MichaelFalk1969

... and don`t take photographs of them doing "it" or they might get annoyed. Families with children should drive by quickly or else they`ll have to explain the bird & bee - thing earlier than they planned to. To be honest I love that photograph. If there is a Zebra Playboy Magazine, it should be centerfold.

Violent crime

by MichaelFalk1969

Most people who go to South Africa have safety concerns because the crime statistics are exceptionally high. I do not claim to be an expert on this, as I have been there only for a few weeks, but my advice is: Go there, enjoy your holiday, and do not be paranoid. With some common sense should be able to avoid danger. It is surely not as if the whole country is a no go-area or a warzone. I guess it is very unlikely to encounter violent crime as a tourist if you follow the basic rules. A few tips:1. Johannesburg and Durban seem to have a very bad reputation among the locals. We decided not to go there. There is lots of other places left to see. Decide for yourself. 2. Cape Town "feels" safe, but has a bad crime statistic. But crime happens mostly in the townships. The areas where you normally stay as a tourist (Waterfront, Camps Bay etc.) are rather safe, often under video surveillance,...

Crime a plenty?

by Steelkite

So the word crime is generally symponous with South Africa...I did not experience any personal accounts but so long as you stay in after dark and are in touristy areas with sufficient security you have nothing to worry about. Stay away from train stations, the townships (unless on a guarded tour), and the downtown core of the major cities.

Malaria

by TheWanderingCamel

Don't take warnings of malaria lightly! Kruger National Park, and a few other areas in South Africa are malaria zones and anyone planning to visit should be prepared with the appropriate anti-malarial medication. Whilst the risk is relatively low compared to other parts of Africa, it is real nonetheless, particularly from October to May (the wet season) and anyone planning a visit should be prepared to take the necessary precautions.See your doctor or a travelller's clinic well before you leave and make sure you have sufficient prophylactic medication for the time you are in a malarial zone. Follow the instructions given carefully. Different prophylactics work in different ways and each one has its own requirements as to how they are to be taken.Make sure you use a good insect-repellant and take all appropriate measures to avoid being bitten such as covering up (especially around the...
